Title: legend rule "dies"
Post by: particle on August 25, 2014, 10:39:44 AM
hey folks, had a question about the legend rule. read {{remillo}}'s post earlier about dying versus discarding in regards to {scuttling doom engline}. i understand his ruling but have a question on a somewhat similar basis. ok, so say you have an {isamaru, hound of konda} on the field. you now cast another a 2nd {isamaru, hound of konda}. now obviously one has to go, but what actually happens? reading the rule isnt the most helpful:

704.5k If a player controls two or more legendary permanents with the same name, that player chooses one of them, and the rest are put into their owners' graveyards. This is called the "legend rule".

so, now to my question. in {{remillo}}'s post, he said whenever a creature goes from field to yard it dies. so is that what is happening here? im not sacrificing one of my isamarus right? but its still dying since field to yard right? still triggers {gravepact} but not {mortician beetle}?

You're correct.  You're not Sacrificing the second Isamaru, since the legend rule just says to choose one (to keep) and put the rest in to the correct graveyards.  However, since they are moving from the battlefield to the graveyard, they'll trigger anything that cares about creatures dying, like {Gravepact} or {Fecundity}.

If a token creature dies, will it still trigger?

Yes, when a token dies it goes to the graveyard, it just cannot exist there and exiles upon impact.

Very much like a misquito hitting your windshield, yes they can hit your windshield but they cease to be a misquito the moment they do...
Reminds me of the Dire Straits song "the bug"
🎶sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug🎶

Ok, back on topic now...
