Title: My sister is better than me.
Post by: Mochalatte37 on August 03, 2014, 07:08:13 PM
I have only been playing card games for a couple of weeks and my sister has played for five months. She loves magic the gathering and even though I wasn't playing she would drag me to FNM and then shove these card pack things in my face or a foil card and get all gitty and happy. Seeing this game bring a smile to her face made me want to play, but even though I went out to a store and purchased a event deck I still can't beat her at the damn card game.

Is there some super card I don't have? Or a trick I don't know?

P.S apperently the card pack things are called booster packs

She's been playing for five months, she has experience, inventory and deck building on her side. When my playgroup started I won nearly every game. I was just better and building decks and making plays. Now the playing field is closer to even. Here's what you need,

What decks does she use? Colours, themes, ect.

How much money is she spending on cards? If she has a three thousand dollar deck she'll probably beat you every time.

How do you lose? Are you getting overrun with creatures? Milled out? Evasive creatures you can't block? Too many burn spells too fast?

How deep are your pockets? If you find a deck that you like spending some money on it will make it competitive (generally).

What are her weaknesses? Flying defence? Drawing half her deck every game? Paying out life for effects? No blockers early game?

If your only goal is to beat her you just have to counter her strategy. Now, I'm not an advocate for hate cards but your play style is probably different. (And getting owned every time sucks).

The other options are making an infect deck, those will consistently kill by turn 3. A burn deck, as long as you can get some defence you should be able to finish her. (Assuming no life gain) or a mill deck. Go buy some {Fog Bank} and {Gaurd Gomoza}, sit behind them and {Traumatize} and {Tome Scour} away.

There are no keys that unlock infinite wins. There are just experienced players that will generally beat you, and decks that do or don't have what it takes. Do some research, find a play style you like and spend some money on it.

Taysby, you can't recommend a Deck like that to a new player...

I looked through the replys and I have a couple of things to say. She has a very adaptive blue and white deck, able to remove my cards from the feild while attacking with powerful creatures that at times heal while entering the feild.

You know what's fun and fairly cheap? Rdw(red deck wins). It's got a basic play style of deal your opponent as much damage as possible as fast as you can. Great for beginners.

I'd like to stick to my Golgari play style which is like my sisters but with more permanent removal effects and harder hitting creatures.

And do you want to play standard? Casual? Edh? Modern? Block?
Figure that out first:)
Then go to some events and just watch games to get ideas and ask other players for ideas and strategies. And play against many many players

Does she have an account? xD B/G has a harsh time with U/W. {Terra Stomper} might be a good investment. I also seriously recommend RDW or maybe some sort of counterburn. Would you be willing to post a deck list so I can attempt to help more directly?

Look in on the standard thread on here to get some ideas. I know the tier 1 decks are expensive but you can make good versions  of them for cheap

You could also both buy a pre constructed standard deck and play against each other. Then it is based more on skill and luck then deck building and who has more cards..

The best thing to do, is just play. She has a 5 month edge on you that no deck is going to fix at the moment. Simply play and learn the ins and outs to the game. And to the sister if your reading this, you BETTER be teaching your brother and not just beating up on him, or else we WILL help him up to and including hooking him up with cards to run you over.

This!!l It's okay to lose, especially if you've just started and if you're sister has more experience. Everybody has to start somewhere.

Take your time to learn how to play the game strategically. Observe your sister and find out why she wins all the time, what plays make or break the game? Post your deck and we can help you on the build and the best way to play.

Keep playing, over time if you keep playing and don't quit or give up you will get better. Go to fnms and bigger tourneys to become BETTER
