Title: Planeswalker Commanders
Post by: Agrus Kos, Enforcer of Truth on July 26, 2014, 03:59:49 PM
So there has been Archemage, which is essentially commander with a planeswalker as general, but now we have planeswalkers that are generals. Will they get banned?

Why would they? I mean wizards just printed it for the sole purpose of allowing people to use it. I don't think they'll ban it. If they did then there would have been no purpose behind making it in the first place.

...because Wizards doesn't control the banlist...

The EDH banlists are done by independent groups (one for French and one for multiplayer)

I don't see what the big deal would be about Planeswalker commanders. As long as they don't interact with the battlefield, it's fine. If its because you have access to it at all times? Planeswalkers aren't as strong as they were once considered,  I have a feeling they probably won't end up being all that powerful or interesting.

I dont think they are OP, just kind of not in the spirit of Edh (literally, Elder Dragon Highlander). Also, you can't tuck/remove planeswalkers as easily as creatures. Lastly, how will it affect French commander? Remember, we have already seen multiple Commander product cards banned....

Commander products are geared toward multiplayer, even says so on the box. 1v1 is a different format, and it's not Elder Dragon highlander. Whatever they decide to ban, they can do that knowing Wizards didn't design any products aimed at that format.

You wouldn't need tuck effects, because Planeswalkers do not attack. They are interacted with in a different way, and thus must be treated as such. There are plenty of ways to interact with planeswalker cards, and in a multiplayer setting they're actually kind of weak because they don't have evasion.

It'll be interesting to see how it pans out.  I'm still not a fan, but we'll find out what happens.

The most hilarious thing that'll happen is someone turning their Teferi into a creature, then killing someone with Commander damage.

Is there an easier way than {Mycosynth Lattice} + {March of the Machines}/{Ensoul Artifact} I haven't looked it up much.
Maybe I should make a no creature aggro deck with  {Opalescence} and {March of the Machines}.

Apperently, according to MaRo, the Council was consulted.

The commander Rules Committee, headed by Sheldon, was consulted by Wizards on this. And the RC gave it's blessing

My question is why the hell isn't {Doubling Season} banned? I've never seen it in a combo that isn't instantly nasty.

They cannot use doubling season with teferi as their general. As long as teferi is not the commander, I'm alright with the ult. Because I can then (probably) kill him. If he's the commander, then after he ults, it doesn't matter if he dies, because they can recast him. after Ult-ing, all you need is teferi to Eff things up. Without him being a commander, they not only need to be able to find him, they also need to have several other walkers to support his emblem.

And no. After marath is on the board, I do not tap out.
