Title: End of main phase....
Post by: Ekann1 on July 25, 2014, 04:51:14 PM
My friend and I were having a debate about casting something(s) end of main phase.

He thinks that if he casts an instant at the end of my main phase after I say "go to combat" I cannot change my mind after his instant resolves and cast a sorcery, play a land, cast a creature, etc.

I disagree. My reasoning: the turn moves to the next step/phase after all players pass priority in succession while the stack is empty. In the situation where I tried to go to combat, that didn't happen, so the active player (me) got priority back.

Because priority would have to be passed again all around (someone played a spell) my main phase isn't over yet.

Who's right?

505.2. The main phase has no steps, so a main phase ends when all players pass in succession while the stack is empty. (See rule 500.2.)
500.2. A phase or step in which players receive priority ends when the stack is empty and all players pass in succession. Simply having the stack become empty doesn't cause such a phase or step to end; all players have to pass in succession with the stack empty. Because of this, each player gets a chance to add new things to the stack before that phase or step ends.

If your opponent plays a spell when you pass priority, then you have a chance to respond with instant-speed stuff. Once you have both passed priority with an empty stack, then the game will continue to the next applicable phase.

If I pass priority, they respond with an instant, and I let it resolve can I cast another sorcery before moving to combat?

You can't "go to combat" until both players pass priority. Once this happens, you can't go back to your main phase.
but he didnt succeed in going to combat. he asked his opponent if he was ready to move to combat. and yes once the instant resolves, youll get priority again and you are free to cast sorcery speed stuff. most likely your opponent should just wait until the start of combat phase before declare attackers.

That would be the ideal time, but assuming he did do it end of main phase (mostly becuase he likes to say "END OF MAIN PHASE..." really loudly) I know know I'm correct that I can cast a sorcery. Thanks! +1
