As a heavy red player I've been doing some hunting for hidden gems in the seemingly endless list of burn spells. I want to know what, in your opinion, are the best burn spells of all time. For each drop slot. I don't have my list done which is part of the reason I'm asking you. :P
{Lightning Bolt} Was that really a question?
{Skullcrack} The bane of burn is life gain. The bane of life gain is {Skullcrack}.
{Flames of the Firebrand} I'm up for debate here. Most 3 drops do three damage and something else. Splitting the damage is the best, in my books.
That new convoke thingy. Cause four for four is good and four for less than four is better.
{Lava Axe} not for utility, damage output, or anything practical. Just that {Lava Axe} is a classic. (Though if we're serious my money is on {Beacon of Destruction}).
The only spell I can think of between here and there is {Explosive Impact}, and it sucks.
{Searing Wind} cause ain't nobody gonna cast that.
{Comet Storm} it's my favourite X cost burn spell. Flavour, utility, damage output. So good.
Thoughts?
If we can branch out from Mono-Red, {Electrolyze} gets my vote on the three CMC slot. The damage can be split and it replaces itself, letting it be one of the bet tempo cards ever printed, alongside {Remand}.

I'd like to keep it mono red but {Electrolyze} is certainly worthy of mention.
Standard burn loves boros charm :)
Dat {Fire Ambush} though :P

Dat {Fire Ambush} though :P
Dat Sorcery speed though :P
{Searing Blood}, {Searing Blaze}, {Searing Spear} and {Searing Rays}.... Oh and {Shock}
{flame rift} and {fire blast}.
{galvanic blast} in the right deck is amazing.

I had that in a deck with the sa can artifact to deal damage and it was bonkers
{Lightning Helix}

Lol, that's so bad. I guess at the time there weren't as many burn spells but cmc 2, sorcery speed.
What about good Ol {fireball}!
I can't believe nobody has mentioned {Chain Lightning}? {Shard Volley} is also pretty sweet! One of my all time favs has to be {Goblin Grenade} though.

{Searing Blood} is situationally good. {Searing Spear} isn't as good as {Skullcrack}. {Shock} is strictly worse than {Lightning Bolt}.

{Comet Storm} is typically better.

All solid picks. Sadly {Lightning Bolt} just dominates the one drop slot.
I'm quite partial to {banefire} myself as an x spell.
In terms of {X} spells {Banefire} wins by a mile!!

Umm...no. {Skullcrack} can't hit creatures and its ability of not gaining life is only good against {Sphinx's Revelation}.

Also damage can't be prevented which kinda helps but I'm with you I much prefer {Searing Spear}

Actually no. They both do the same thing and fireball costs less to cast

Fireballs a sorcery ... Comet is instant
Fireball, x = 6 with an extra target costs 8 mana, and can deal 6 total damage to 2 targets.
Comet storm, x = 5 kicked once, costs 8 mana and will deal 5 damage to one target and 5 damage to another.

It's also important to note that fireball has to split that damage equally among its targets. So although it might be 6 total damage to two targets, it must be 3 and 3.

Did not catch that, thank you :)
No problem. It took about two months of playing it wrong for me to catch it too lol
Why you all no say {goblin grenade}????
~Don't underestimate the aerodynamic qualities of a goblin ;)

Splitting the damage evenly vs blasting everything is why {Comet Storm} is better.

I have bias against {Searing Spear} as it's literally {Lightning Bolt} for {1} extra. {Skullcrack}'s utility makes me like it better.
{incenerate} is better over {searing spear} just for the exile
Quote from: ConanEdo on July 25, 2014, 09:01:13 PM
{punishing fire}
{Lightning ax}
{Punishing Fire} is pretty situational. Most of the time {Skullcrack} is better as they're going to be gaining more life than {Punishing Fire} dishes back.
{Lightning Axe} is creature only therefore fail.

For {Punishing Fire}, {Grove of the Burnwillows} makes for infinite kill spells. Lightning Axe is solid gold in limited.
I'm talking to the face burn not creature removal.

It doesn't seem very cost effective. That being said it's not bad, and I'm struggling to come up with something better.
Maybe not cost effective but it's a free burn spell every turn guarenteed (unless they exile it)
{pyroclasm}
{bonfire of the damned}
{electolyze}
{magmaquake} <---- my favorite
Oooooo dat bonfire

Look at the punishing Jund legacy deck. It revolves around getting a lock and burning them out with this synergy.
