Title: Rank yourself
Post by: Mattao19 on July 20, 2014, 07:44:49 PM
From 1-10.

1 being a noob just started
10 being I just won a PT

Here rank yourself in these categories and then avg them up for a total overall

1. Deckbuilding.
Whether it's a complete home brew or a net deck that you made changes to.

2. Opening Hands.
Do you know when to mulligan?

3. Gameplay.
Do you know when to doom blade or counter a spell? Do you know what land to play T1? Etc.

4. Predicting.
Do you know what to play around? Do you cast your wincon if they have 2 mana up? Etc.

5. Natural Talent.
Do things just work out? Bc in any tcg luck is involved.

Personally I'm:

1. 8
2. 6
3. 8
4. 8
5. 7

For an overall 7. I feel like I'm a pretty average player :P

I'm probably like 7.5(on a good day), 8(also on a good day), solid 8, 8, 6. I can make some good EDH decks with a few tries and some play testing, standard I usually build pretty solid decks too, I don't even touch legacy or vintage and modern I don't have very much experience so overall I think my deck building skills could get better. Usually it hangs around 6.5 on a regular day. In game though I'm pretty solid, I like to play mind games and I can usually read people pretty well so I never really have a problem with working around other players.

8.5-9 if I am not exhausted or just playing for fun I know when to critically mull.
7.5-8.5 it really depends on the deck, if I get time to play test and play it a lot im a 8-8.5 but when its a new deck im a 7.5.
9 I have memorized allot the main decks of the top decks in the current meta, etc. I can know what is In my opponents hand (of course not everything but the general play xD)
8- I have average luck that is rewarded with good play

8.5 sounds good

So we are all borderline pro tour levels except for me?  Be realistic in your ratings!  ;)

Who are you exactly to say we aren't...? Worry about your own ratings not those of other people ;)

5,7,8,7,4. I just have really bad luck. For instance, I played a game tonight. My opening hand was 5 land and 2 drops so naturally I'm thinking cool I have early game and I shouldn't hit more than like one land for the next few turns...I go 7 turns drawing land and then I died...btw, the next 4 cards after that were lands...that is about 2/3 of my lands on top....how is that even possible?!?!

I would rate myself as a solid 7, across the board. This is based on a cavet that I have never played in a PTQ or GP.

1. Deckbuilding: 5-6

Anyone can netdeck, but I feel that I can make a pretty legit home brew. I think I have a decent grasp on proper numbers and can come up with some pretty sweet oddball tech here and there.

2. Opening Hands: 3

I'm notorious for keeping questionable hands, and truthfully don't mulligan nearly as aggressive as I should. It also doesn't help when bad hands get there, and when mulling, checking the top card and finding out that it made the bad hand legit.

3. Gameplay: 5

I know when to hold 'em and when to bolt 'em for the most part, but still find myself questioning plays and missing triggers regularly. Some days I'm on top of my game and feel like I play perfectly, but I'm still far from misplays being few and far between.

4. Predicting: 6

I have a pretty good grasp on the Modern meta game, and can usually categorize a deck by the 2nd land drop, but still have a habit of fearing counter spells. I try my best to always play through them though. Other formats like Legacy and Vintage elude me, and I can honestly say I would be flying blind for the most part. Standard I have an okay bearing in, but there are plenty of home brews and I don't play nearly enough to keep up with the shifts and rises in deck lists. I'm alright at sniffing out removal and playing 3 turns ahead though, and I'm not bad at counting to 20.

5. Natural Talent: 4

Variance can some days be my best friend, but more often tends to give me the finger. With that said, I prefer to play decks with tons of shuffling effects, and more than likely this rating stems from my inability to shuffle like a pro. Being able to properly randomize a deck is huge, and that's just another thing that I can confidently say I need some work on.

Overall: high 4's to low 5's, so about a 4.7.

I think I'm a good player, but I know a good handful of people with a greater understanding of the game and rules. With that said I continually strive to better my play and mastery of this tcg.

I'm going to be brutally honest, if 10 is winning a pro tour, I doubt anyone on this forum is above a 6 or 7.I base this mainly on luck comments (Read Stuck in the Middle with Bruce for why I don't accept luck as a reason to lose anymore, unless you think LSV or Kibler have had decades worth of good luck), and the fact that a lot of people here are posting FNM results. My question is, can you consistently take down 8-4s on MODO? Do you feel confident you have a better than average chance of day 2ing any given GP (if you've never been to a GP, you're never going to win, probably won't day 2 your first)? Are you the favorite to win a PTQ? No, then don't kid yourself, you're not an 8. To answer the question, I consider myself a 5.

Typical overly serious mtg player, unable to define talent as anything other then PT status's. The truth is, some of the best players out there may never play in a PTQ for all of their life. Why you ask, if they are really so good? Well, everyone has their reasons. Some might not like the competitive scene, others might just prefer EDH (but that doesn't means they are not an amazing player). For myself, it's that I'd rather not spend entire days surrounded by large sweaty men with their buttcracks hanging out, or the plentiful A-holes like you, both of which usually have no social skills whatsoever making them quite unpleasant to be around. That is valuable weekend off-time that I'd much rather use to spend time with my family, friends, or beautiful girlfriend. But hey, if you want ever want to come personally evaluate my playing abilities (and not ignorantly make assumptions about them based on my failure to go to a PTQ), I'll give you my address. It would give me great pleasure to send you home with your tail between your legs ;)

1. Deckbuilding.
Probably one of my strongest suits, I'm clever, creative, and competitive
6

2. Opening Hands.
This is my area of most needed improvement
I want to force hands to work sometimes when I really shouldn't, it doesn't pan out so I've been forcing it out of myself as of late.
3

3. Gameplay.
I can keep up with the pace when I'm on the win streak and I can make a come back, but if I overextend or play to fast I make mistakes, I'd sAy this a place I need work.
4

4. Predicting.
I'm pretty good at guessing games, sometimes I lose out on luck but you can't predict luck. I focus on my current knowledge of the game state.
6

5. Natural Talent.
it's about 50/50
5

4.8

Your large ego, sweeping generalizations, and incredible projecting skills make your a-hole comment incredibly ironic. You become better by playing better people, the best play at large events. Get over yourself.

If I didn't know any better I would think you were describing yourself right there. It takes one to know one I guess.

I'd average somewhere around 5-6 IMHO. It's kinda a difficult scale to go on if 1 is new player and 10 is pro and or hall of fame player. I think variance/luck plays a significant role. I could probably add lots more but I'm tired 😴
