Title: So I'm Going To Prerelease...
Post by: LinkCelestrial on July 11, 2014, 01:18:47 PM
I've managed to convince my parents. It helps that they play magic and want to go too. :P

Any advice? We're doing sealed with prerelease kits. I've never done sealed or anything in an actual paid for tournament so any advice is helpful. The prizing is Swiss, and I have a crash course understanding of how that works.

Is sealed like a massive draft? Or do we only get to work with what comes in the kits? (I've heard of people doing it both ways and calling it sealed.) Should I try to stick with my kit colours? (I'm thinking {R} or {U}). Ive only ever kitchen table drafted multiplayer, so what are some differences I should look for in deck building?

I'm hoping to at least go 2-X. Is that realistic?

Excuse the newbieness. I'm a socially awkward person so I'm trying to be prepared.

Sealed:

6 booster packs, open them all, build a 40 card deck, smash face.

At a prerelease, you'll have one seeded pack and 5 regular packs. The seeded pack contains an on-color promo and more on-color cards in general, so yeah, you'll definitely want to play your seeded color. You'll probably almost definitely need to play two colors, I would recommend against 3+ colors.

And 2-0 isn't unrealistic. I play at a good sized place, and went 4-1 my first prerelease, and I'm fairly new to magic! A lot of sealed has to do with what's in your sealed pool. Everyone is subject to bad pools. You don't get the liberty of deciding what is in your pool like with normal drafting, so there's a chance that there will be not be any rares in your color! This is really just my opinion though. I know that good players can work with bad cards, but not nearly as well...

Just looking at the cards, Black is probably the best color to try and get, since the Promo in your Seeded pack is MILES better than the other four.  Generally, prerelease payout is done by record, rather than standing, so if you go 2-x-x, you should be guaranteed at least a pack.  That's just based on the stores I've been to, though, so make sure to check.

The prerelease is very casual and a very fun event. Just enjoy it and don't take things to seriously. Just have fun and laugh ;)

Yes
Have fun
Trade off any big money foils ASAP

Scratch that. Sell anything big you pull, if the price is high right now, it won't stay that high

After going black (with no support, forcing me to play {U}{R}) and then white (which was only decent, despite pulling {Raise the Alarm}, {Preeminent Captain} and {Avacyn, Guardian Angel}), I think the best thing to play is red. The game gets stalled out with 2/2s, 2/3s, 3/1s and 1/1s so the Dragon can get you a ton of card advantage. Also, red has the best removal with something like 6 burn spells in the set, where black only has like 2 removal spells.
