Title: Legend Rule or X/0?
Post by: KulrathKnight on April 07, 2012, 09:15:50 AM
Hypothetical:

My opponent has {Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite} on the battlefield. He has placed 3 {Curse of Death's Hold}s on me and I have 2 {Heartless Summoning}s in play. I then cast an {Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite} myself.

Question:

Which happens first? The Legend rule killing both creatures, or zero toughness just killing mine?

It's seems like none of his spells keeps your Elesh from entering the battle field so they still cancel each other out

Excellent question!  The state is checked right before any player would get priority. All conditions are checked an performed simultaneously: legend rule applies and creatures with 0 toughness are destroyed together.

But does the legend rule check for multiples of a legend BEFORE or AFTER the zero-toughness rule checks for toughness? If it's after, his Elesh is safe because they are both state-based effects.

Edit: Thanks Jester. Since they happen simultaneously it doesn't matter what order the SBEs are checked then right?

They occur at the same time i.e. Both legend check and 0 toughness will happen. Yes, his Elesh is destroyed.
