Title: Marchesa archetype questions
Post by: Agrajagzz9 on June 15, 2014, 06:55:03 PM
So I am in the process of building a marchesa the black rose edh deck and cannot decide on an archetype I like. I like her value with ETB effects but I also don't feel like she needs it. I could also run it like a  {Vela the Night-Clad} deck with small evasive attackers which will grow under dethrone. I could also go more of a control game with a few creatures and boardwipes . So I wanted to ask you all which archetype you think would be best in a multiplayer meta. ETB effects is flashy but I more likely to be viewed as a threat. But the small guys don't feel like they are making the best use of her abilities. Thoughts?

If I were to build Marchesa, I'd probably go on the Grixis Weenie route, playing most of the Undying creatures for insane value.  Marchesa allows you to grow your team and survive board wipes, so you can probably play your own without fear.  Red also gives you ways to give your guys haste, so you could potentially wipe first main and immedietly swing in.  Black gives you more wipes and ways to pay life to try and make sure that you don't have the highest life total for Dethrone, as well as Reanimator spells to revive past the Marchesa ability.  Blue can give you some control elements, though I'd probably limit it to removal to get blockers out of the way, and draw cards when you hit with Looter creatures and Costal Piracy/Bident of Thassa effects.

Just be aware that you'll probably draw hate for being the aggressor, though Aggro style decks always do that.  I've taken to getting around that by just picking on one person until they're dead and working from there.  Since you lack white to play {Mystic Barrier}, you'll probably have to find some other means to keep yourself alive.

Those are just my thoughts

We'll first her abilit brings them back at end step so wrathing and attacking won't work.

But overall I like the idea. Her ability makes blocking seem fruitless and in testing I have found that other players will attack each other in an attempt to make me have the most life. This works doubly In my favor but I guess I just want to give my self the best use of her abilities. Maybe adding some cards like aetherize or illusionist gambit to make people not want to attack me.

I'd go with lots if undying creatures and lots of pay life effects to put your oppendmt on a higher life total

Whoops, forgot Marchesa brings them back at the end of turn.  But then, it remains kinda the same, just without the hasteyness.  You swing in with things, get some damage in and not care about creatures dying, then board wipe in the second main.  Could be fun, though Grixis Aggro just feels...  unnatural.

i played against a marchesa, {flayer of the hatebound} {cauldron of souls} deck today. they also had {unspeakable symbol} to make sure everything had a 1/1 counter on it before it died.

I have considered flayer the hate bound but he is so expensive and just always gets pathed. Cauldron of souls is sort of a nonbo with marchesa

well cauldren is just there in case they kill marchesa before they kill your other stuff. so you can get the other stuff back, and then rebuild next turn when you recast marchesa.

I tried subbing Marchesa in as my commander in my jeleva build... I found that she was very underwhelming... Especially once you are at the highest life. Then ur just like "man I wish my commander would do something..."
