Title: Visible karma cap petition
Post by: Ekann1 on June 15, 2014, 02:37:24 PM
I think Piotr should remove the 100 karma cap. While it fixes some issues, the people who this affects the most have earned their high karma. They deserve, in my opinion, for people to be able to see that. I hope people will believe me when I say this is not just because I have 100+ karma. I feel there should be more of a visible difference than just 100+ or not. Does anyone agree with me?

I agree. I sign the petition

But to look at history, petitions make no difference to Piotr. Our voice doesn't matter

If you're gonna make a cap make it solid :P I sign. The last petition didn't go over so well though :P

Yeah, I had that in the title originally but then decided it wasn't a good way to start things off :P

Maybe since this isn't so personal it will work better. We can hope.

Personally I can care less either way about the karma. I just find it amusing that people with large karma stacks would tell people with little or negative to not worry about it. Now the shoe is on the other foot and they are upset. My question is how can you tell other people not to worry about it then later be upset about your own.

I'm just making a general statement not towards anyone who is posting before or after this.

I think (back when karma could go upwards of 800^)  it was a decent enough way to show like. Those with higher karma. Were trustable (or entertaining) active members of the community. Of course. A lot of those members left...but the ones that are still here, it's a good way to tell who's new/un trustable/trustable.
100 isn't drastically difficult to achieve. But, it's easier to nuke if they turn sour as a member. So i can see why its a useable cap. I think 200~250 would be better perhaps? Personal opinion.
I would happily be apart of the petition.
If it happens. Good. If not. We'll have to deal with it I suppose? And I'm sorry for those that got their karma cut down. I just hope this petition doesn't turn into another powderkeg ready to blow off a few more members of the community.

We should all go on a negging spree, so everyone's karma is 100

It is a HUGE ISSUE!  And that pisses me off.  I'll sign that petition.

I understand the whole lady thing. But has anyone pm'ed Piotr or put a suggestion in on ideas and feedback. Before we make a big deal about it let's take the easy route first. Maybe it was an over site.

You are essentially calling all females sluts by changing the word "w'hore" to "lady". Yes or no, most females would think this?

"Every lady is a whôre" is what that is insinuating.

Ah!  Beat me to it, FMA!

If anything, it would be 'every .bore. is a lady'. This is just dumb.

...I don't follow. How does turning "whôre" into "lady" mean "lady=lady?"  That means "whôre=lady," no?

You miss the point. It doesn't matter if that's what it means, it matters how people take it.

Whôre's can be men. To change the word to lady insinuates they are the same thing

Ok this is the way I see it. You are trying to make this a pg-9. So to do that you are replacing one word for another. Yea it doesn't really mean the same with f-ck to love. But to some they take wh-r- to lady as you saying they are interchangeable. My suggestion is to change it to prostitute.  Some people take offense to it. Yes we can go back and forth about it but why not just change it to keep the masses happy.

Sounds fine to me. I didn't notice that translation so it really didn't effect me but will make some people happy so thanks. ( hope bore doesn't have another meaning I don't know of 😋😋).

Even if there were something to the choice of word beyond simply removing offensive language, seems to me Piotr's saying no one should refer to women as whores.

I think people just like to argue :)

I like this one :) At the end of the day we don't know exactly why we made decisions such as these. I remember vaguely that at the time when I was adding offensive words people might use, I was finding words and trying nice warm fuzzy feeling replacements for them. So when one would want to say, .love. you .bore. it would make the offender say the opposite. That joke is now partially ruined, thanks to political correctness :P

As for the other petition, are we all clear that your karma is still visible in full detail, including %, on your public profiles? To people for whom karma matters, including yours truly, it is still accessible with a little bit more effort added.

Yes, but when things are not easily visible, it makes them less important. To me, there is no point in having karma work like this. I think either have it or get rid of it, but not something in between.

It's such a silly thing to petition. Karma DOES NOT MATTER. At the end of the day, it's just a number.

To me, karma is mostly about seeing the trolls early.

I find it super amusing that a lot of people who support taxing the rich because they have too much money are upset that they lost their karma because they worked for it. Same with the rich.

So now it appears that they support letting the rich keep their money.  ;)

Perhaps that particular group of people have a very special difficulty with gaining karma? That would explain some of the ferocity, things you have to work hard for to get, you value more? ;)

Well if we do have it, we might as well have it fully. Piotr, can you either quote from somewhere or tell us what the reason for the cap was? I didn't see it if was posted somewhere.

It's was "To prevent karma whoring."

Experiment is the reason. I'm curious what will happen.

Sometimes we made enough experiments in implementing something to know well what will happen when we implement it. Like, socialism, implement it and most people will hate it. With karma systems though, much is unknown yet :)
