What is the timing on this card for it to be played properly?

The timing would be to cast it like any other creature. For best results, do it after a creature died that turn.

My understanding is after battle the turn is over...or have I been mislead?

When it says target creature gets -4/-4 until end of turn.....if I target a creature thats a (let's say) 2/2 will the creature go to the graveyard or just be removed from combated?

There is another main phase after combat.

Any creature with toughness 0 or less dies.

Also important to know that this ability is not optional. If a creature died and then she is the only creature when you cast her she has to target herself. 😭
