Title: Mass melee
Post by: Noblellama on May 30, 2014, 10:22:55 AM
This weekend my lgs is holding a standard mass melee event.
8 people per game, standard decks only

Looking for ideas

Currently thinking {B}{W} extort deck for the massive life gain, slip in archangel of thune for size, and add in  {Sanguine Bond} for single player hate

Please post your ideas on what I should run and what I should watch out for (I don't play standard at all usually)
Keep in mind this is 8-player free for alls

Definitely exort for 8-player!! I'd go Esper to splash for Verdict! And as a finisher  {Debt to the Deathless}?

Also remember that this is basically EDH so be polite and be friendly to all ... Then when the times right smash their face!!!

Also if you go Esper you can run {Mind Grind} as a finisher too :P

Good luck and remember the most important thing is to ha ... Nah fvck that the most important thing is to win!!!

Yeah, that sounds like it would be your best bet, since it's easily scalable.  Basically, Mono-Back Extort with white Splashed for Blind Obedience, Underworld Coinsmith, Riot Control and Archangel of Thune.  You'll want some removal or deterrent from attacking you while you set up, and the Riot Controls for when people actually do start attacking you.  Coinsmith can probably provide some good advantage, especially with gaining life from Extort, which can also be used to fuel Underworld Connections and Erebos.  Actually, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that you could build the Vizkopa Guildmage/Sanguine Bond combo deck in an extort shell, since they both go well with the Drain idea.

So, I think you could actually just go Turbo-Grey Merchant and do fairly well.  Play low cost creatures and permanents with B symbols (along with Extort) and just power out Grey Merchants do destroy everyone, then splashing White for Blind Obedience and Fog effects.  Since you'll want 4x Merchant, having Archangel and Blood Baron up there, too, would just clutter your 5 slot way too much.  Heck, you could play terrible cards like Dark Prophecy for the BBB (Unless you have Nightveil Specters) and some incidental card draw.  You'll probably run in to a lot of similar decks and control decks, since Aggro does absolutely terribly in Multiplayer.  Consider Erebos to prevent opposing lifegain?

I guess the core could look something like this:

3-4 {Blind Obedience}
4 {Grey Merchant of Asphodel}
3-4 {Underworld Connections}
Random Extort Dudes ({Basilica Screecher}, {Crypt Ghast}, {Thrull Parasite})

B/W extort is the best for multiplayer games. Crypt ghast and lily ramp into some amazing debts. I've been in some games where I've hit everyone for 76 and ended with several hundred health.

Think that will be a big thing?

Turns off any sort of Haste and provides additional Extort.  I say go for it.

Without a doubt. {Blind Obedience} will give you a great chance to build up/draw into answers. It will put a target on your back from creature based decks however. The trick in Mass is to keep a low profile at first and then have a wipe in hand (for you it's eviction) and a hard-to-answer threat you can drop immediately after.
