Title: Copy stuff
Post by: Sparkle Ninja on May 28, 2014, 12:19:09 AM
Can two cards that copy instants and sorcerers create an infinite cast loop of that card if they both target each other? For instance two {reverberate} targeting each other? Also would that then trigger {guttersnipe} infinitely? Thanks!

I honestly see nothing wrong with that. I'll try and find a ruling.

Sweet. That's my husband's main win-con for his EDH deck is reverberate copying wild ricochet or something of the like with something that triggers off of instant/sorcery castings for infinite triggers. It also works with storm if I'm correct

Unless an effect specifically states so, Copies are never cast; they're just added to the stack.  So you can't just kill people with Guttersnipe, Infinite mana and {Reiterate}.  Actually, that one works from casting reiterate, but the copies never trigger Snipe.

How does the first {Reverberate} target the second one?

You cast reverberate, targeting something.  Then you cast a second one to copy the first.  Then you perpetually have the copies target the first reverberate over and over again.  This doesn't actually do anything, really.  You won't get an infinite number of objects on the stack for, say {Nivmagus Elemental}.  You need {Wild Ricochet} for that.

Just working this out for my own benefit...

{lightning bolt} target opponent
{reverberate} lightning bolt
Stack: lightning bolt, reverberate

Reverberate reverberate
Stack: lightning bolt, reverberate, reverberate

2nd reverberate resolves copying reverberate, target reverberate

Repeat ad nausium, stack only ever has 3 objects and only 3 spells have been cast. Target lightning bolt to break the cycle

So, after second reverberate is on the stack, counter the lightning bolt to force the game into a draw. Interesting.

{lightning bolt} targeting player
{wild ricochet} targeting lightning bolt
Stack: lightning bolt, wild ricochet

Cast wild ricochet targeting wild ricochet
Stack: LBolt, WRicochet, WRicochet

WRicochet resolves, only 1 legal target for the original spell, copy targets WRicochet. Rinse and repeat same as reverberate.
