each format depends on expansion it covers

as of now.. standard..

from Return To Ravnica block to THEROS block

modern...

from 8th ed to Theros Block

meaning.. in standard.. you can only use cards from RtR - Theros blocks

and in modern from 8th edition up to latest which is the Theros block

(also, banned cards apply)
