I know merfolk elves faeries are strongish, any other viables? What about zombies/humans/octopus? Etc etc

I think if someone put some time into it, Slivers could be a thing. {Galerider Sliver}, {Predatory Sliver}, {Sinew Sliver}...

You could probably pull of Wizards, or Demons. Maybe Kithkin or Hydras.

Goblins are possible in Modern.  A little slow, compared to their Legacy counterparts, but still viable.  As far as transferring between Modern and Legacy, Merfolk is much, much better.  You just add Daze and maybe force and you're good to go. 

Darn it, now I want to build modern Goblins.
