{Archangel of thune} if I have her on the field and drop {Gary merchant of asphodel} for say 6 do my creature get one counter or 6?

 {Archangel of Thune} states "whenever you gain life", so any instance where you gain life, the amount is irrelevant.

that would be two instances of life gain, so 2.
