Title: What to do
Post by: MisterJH on March 29, 2014, 02:47:11 PM
Theres no motivation for me to play this game. I love it but its just virtually nonexistant where i live, theres one shop thats pretty shitty, that usually ends up having an 8 person draft on saturdays if were lucky, and runs STANDARD only FNM. The people there are largely creepy as well. I just am lost, cockatrice is boring now theres no face to fce interactions and is full of netdecks, and theres no way toget feedback or trade or BS with the other player, its just so boring now.. Im gettin sad i just have no way to enjoy this game anymore :(

You could try MTGO. At least there you can trade and people can't just use whatever they want. Another option is to drive an hour or so, I am sure you can find a good shop within that range. I love in a small town with a shop that is the same as yours, but now I am carpooling with a friend to go to a better shop a half hour away.

Up in my area of LA we have MNM magic with at least one standard pod at one store
A tues standard at another
Wednesday is legacy
Thursday my main store has at least 2 pods drafting.
Friday FNM is usually standard but yesterday we did a chaos draft since low turnout. Everyone chose 3 packs for $8, and we drafted from RTR to BNG. All random packs. Was truly a blast.

Maybe find a few people you can deal with and make your own play group.

Have you thought about playing Magic on Skype? You have to use actual cards you have and you can interact with people, via the camera. Also try your local school/college/university, as they seem to have a thriving Magic community of players. That is how I broke the ice, myself to find new local players, here in N. California. Give it a shot, and let me know.

You're in HS
Once you're able to be more independent and somewhere further away ala college, you will find more individuals with the same MO as yourself, high school is not the melting pot it seems to be.

Well they have kids who play in my school but thats the issue, different MOs, its just hard to find people i gel with who also play mtg :/ theres 2who are alright but the rest of my friends who played quit for the same issue im having, most of the mtgers arent the have fun party type etc etc

Im trying to be nice and politically correct about this idk how to better explain it

You just have to have drinking games with mtg, then you're no longer a nerd.

Also wearing contacts instead of glasses and having braces during middle school helps ;)

I have to drive an hour away to find a store because there isn't one in my town. I have a play group though, and making a deck the trading for all of it is keeps the spark of magic alive.

My advice: stop playing magic for now. Just forget about it! Clearly trying to plug into a community has no worked because of logistical issues. Don't sell all of your cards or anything, but just put it on hold. Focus on other things for now and pick magic up again when the timw is right.

But is much fun :( like i said im probably just going to draft because thts by far my favorite thing, deckbuilding plus working under pressure it just my favorite magic pasttime. But yea i guess now is not the time for the rest of mtg for me

I like what Vampire said. Pastimes come and go! And in some scenarios, they come back! If it's not doing it for you right now, that doesn't mean it won't in the future. So don't feel stressed or anything of the sort to hold onto it if it's affecting you negatively. In the larger scale of things, it's just a lot of cardboard and money. I don't have a shop where I live (although one is moving here and I'm PSYCHED) and I have to drive an hour away if I ever want to go to one. I don't have a playgroup in town. It's actually quite aggravating that there's not many people to play with. But eh, whatever. Deck building gets me my fix in the meantime.

Haha same, i build decks daily sometimes :p the problem is im too impatient to playtest on cockatrice

Im considering really puting full effort in playing cheap jank standard, especially once RtR block rotates out and mono-bi color decks may have more leverage. Then ican go to FNM on occasion. But of course.. Drafting <3 its really the best ever, i might also looking into MTGO drafts.. Thats something i could live with and have a good time with

I played a little bit in Middle school and restarted during my senior year of High School after watching some friends pick it up.  And now it's a huge part of my life.  If you go out to college after high school  scope out the local scene, check out clubs, local shops, etc.  you'll probably find a lot more community after you leave grade school.  There have been many times when I'm just walking across campus and overhear something Magic-related in someone else's conversation, and I jump right in.  Maybe it just means that until then, you spend your time on iMTG and Cockatrice, but don't be completely discouraged if you can't find people to play with right now.
