Title: Cartilage damage?
Post by: MisterJH on March 26, 2014, 07:10:21 PM
I plan on researching myself but i was wondering if anyone has had experience with cartilage damage? I tore my meniscus a little over a month ago in my sport, and due to my GP misdiagnosing me TWICE like an IDIOT despite me SAYING I THINK I TORE MY MENISCUS, i continued to play and have no suffered moderate cartilage damage. More specifically i was wondering if anyone knew the chances of recovery, the degree of recovery etc.. As my surgeon(pre-op meeting, yet to have surgery) said its a shaky operation dependent on luck more than anything. I was just wondering if/how well ill heal from this. Im hardly worried about the meniscal tear, thatll be fine always is. The cartilage scares the bajeebers out of me.

Woo a success story! Thats exactly what i wanted to hear!! Thanks man! Im really just interested in getting back to lifting weights, it really dampens your spirit when you cant work on your chicken legs OR your upper body lest you risk looking like a triangle stood on its point

Lol benching etc is not the problem, i can and have done it since my injury, thats actually the safest exercise ive done, ignoring.. The heavy deadlifts i did
Legpressed
Calf raises
Standing presses
Probably some other dumb stuff

Its just disheartening because if i build my upper body as my legs slowly but surely atrophy, well you can see how i start to look like 'arm day every day' man quickly

I think im goig to stick to straight strength/bodyweight trainig to minimize hypertrophy and at least improve strength/tone in my upper body, but its just sad as i was improving so well in my squatting just before the injury:/ anyways, ish happens

If you are in your early twenties then you can still regrow cartilage.  I dislocated my shoulder and tore my labrum.  I had surgery and took the rehab very seriously.  I also took glucosamine and condrotin.....there are two different types so do your research.  Omega 3 fish oil supplements are also helpful with joints and what not so maybe taking those can help your recovery as well.  I was 25 when I went through this and now I am turning 33 this year.....I feel my shoulder is almost back to 100%.  Last thing I will say is that ice is your friend and be sure to ice the injury for exactly 15 mins when you have pain and especially after a rehab workout.  The first week or so I kept ziplock bags filled with 50/50 water/rubbing alcohol in the freezer and I iced my shoulder probably 15 mins once an hour.....I think this helped my early recovery a great deal.

Good luck

Hey thanks! Apparently the injuries were more severethan thought, but also the doctor was surprised by the amount i meniscus that had actually grown(quite unusual, i shouldnt have been able to produce more menisus). Anyways the surgery went well and my prognosis looks very positive!' :)
