Title: blocking but not blocking
Post by: TreeTopSky on March 25, 2014, 08:19:56 PM
everytime i attack, doesnt matter with what; deathtouch, first strike, trample, etc. My friend BLOCKS the combat then plays an instant to save his creature. ie: attacking with reach, deathtouch, trample 8/9 and has to be blocked. He blocks with an 0/4 then pprevents damage. why doesnt he take the trample? furthermore, he also returns a creature he blocked with to his hand sometimes. How can he block AND save his creature?

{Enlarge} is on {Deadly Recluse}, i attack, {Kraken Hatchling} is the chosen blocker then my friend plays {Fog}.

The other instance is:

{Deputy of Acquittals} is on my opponents side of the field, I attack with whatever + trample, he chooses to block the combat with the deputy, then plays another one and returns the one he used to block with to his hand.

In the first instance, {Fog} prevents all combat damage anyway so no damage is done at all.

In the second instance, there is now no creature blocking your trampling creature. Your opponent will take the full power of that creature as combat damage.

Well if you have trample the the deputy of acquittals move will just make him takethe full damage from your creature

fog will prevent all damage dealt which is how he saves himself

Figured I would add all the relevant rulings to this question

702.19b (http://imtgapp.com/forum/index.php?action=imtg;area=rule;number=702.19b): The controller of an attacking creature with trample first assigns damage to the creature(s) blocking it. Once all those blocking creatures are assigned lethal damage, any remaining damage is assigned as its controller chooses among those blocking creatures and the player or planeswalker the creature is attacking. "**More text under actual ruling**"

702.19c (http://imtgapp.com/forum/index.php?action=imtg;area=rule;number=702.19c): If an attacking creature with trample is blocked, but there are no creatures blocking it when damage is assigned, all its damage is assigned to the player or planeswalker it's attacking.

This last ruling is for deathtouch and as you can see that it says that any nonzero is lethal and combine that with trample which states it must assign lethal damage before moving onto the player. It is a strong combo.

702.2b (http://imtgapp.com/forum/index.php?action=imtg;area=rule;number=702.2b): Any nonzero amount of combat damage assigned to a creature by a source with deathtouch is considered to be lethal damage, regardless of that creature's toughness. See rules 510.1c-d.

^ 👍👍👍

Please guys - use relevant rulings and if the question is answered: only add relevant rulings, over explaining will only complicate original Q
