Title: Doubling Season
Post by: Splicer on March 24, 2014, 01:31:22 PM
If I use the +1 abillity on a planeswalker, will doubling season give it +2? I'm pretty sure it does, but my opponent disagrees.

It does not double the counters that are added from the planeswalker abilities.

{doubling season} states that if an ability would put them on it would double, the part of putting on counters is the cost not the ability itself.

from the gatherer of doubling season:

10/1/2005   Planeswalkers will enter the battlefield with double the normal amount of loyalty counters. However, if you activate an ability whose cost has you put loyalty counters on a planeswalker, the number you put on isn't doubled. This is because those counters are put on as a cost, not as an effect.

Just thought of a perfect example

{Gideon, champion of justice} with {doubling season}

His +1 ability,  the +1 will not be doubled but you will get twice as many loyalty counters as they have creatures.

wont the activation (plus 1ing} be effected by {doubling season} as well.

So you essentially 'pay' the cost of adding a loyalty counter, as if you were 'paying' mana or something? Interesting concept, never knew that!
