Title: Replacement for tarmagoyf
Post by: Dmreiss on March 16, 2014, 11:38:44 AM
Is there a reasonable replacement for the big guy?  I have the other staples, Thoughtseize, wasteland, and lands.  I just don't have the $700 to drop on a playset. What do you guys think?

{vinelasher kudzu}

Good early game, dead draw late game.

If you want something that costs twice as much to cast you always have any other {Luhygoyf}

Not necessarily green. Just needs to fit into a jund deck.

I think {scavenging ooze} is your bed bet

That and it has become more affordable lately. Thanks for the idea.

And it shrinks goyf along with deathrite shaman you can get some serious value.

The problem with Scooze is it requires you to sink mana in to it. As a fellow jund player that's not really what you want to be doing with your turn. My experience is that you need all of your mana every turn, spending some to grow Scooze slows you down.

So would you suggest ramping into a hydra as opposed to scavenging ooze, for example.  Or do you have a different suggestion to replace goyf?

The problem is goyf does everything. If being a bad top-deck is what concerns you the least then {Vineslasher Kudzu} or {Quirion Dryad} aren't bad. They get just as big as goyf but it takes time. If paying mana into it doesn't bother you then Scooze or {Skinshifter} are both fine. If really want something to be a good top-deck then {Boneyard Wurm} may be good. The problem is goyf is good at all times with very little downside, everything else is situational. If I personally had to pick I would say {Nimble Mongoose} only because it can be assumed a 3/3. The problem with that is gofy is often the win-con of the deck by getting in for 5-6 damage. Nimble is a way longer clock

Depending on the deck, I personally find Young Pyromancer to be a particularly good replacement. Needs the right home though.

Lol seems good
And siege isn't in abrupt range :)

True. I'm iffy on it because 4 color deck are kinda hit or miss, especially in aggro. Get tripped up on lands early game and there is little chance of recovery.

Siege Rhino is a lot harder to cast though. The thing with Goyf is that he is so easy.

Hooting mandrils or Tasigur might be viable options. They delve which means they could be the anti-Goyf.

Was gonna say. {Hooting Mandrils}, {Tasigur, the Golden Fang}, {Grumag Angler}.
