Title: Dear wizards
Post by: Shadridium on March 10, 2014, 07:55:06 AM
Please take a break from the super heavy creature based mechanics and sets...please. Go back and look at the 1999 world championship and count how many creatures they play. I like that kind of magic too and I feel like it needs to be possible because I'm tired of the last three sets being "best in slot one drops, two drops and three drops." Mazes end decks made me really happy to see because it wasn't creature dependent like even esper control even was :/. Wizards I love your game but the simple creature based mechanics have gotten old in standerd and I have moved on to edh and don't plan on looking back. Thank you for such an amazing game, but please other styles need love too.

Theyre just smart enough to realize that each successive generation lacks more and more intelligence, common sense and practical application skills. Basically we're getting too stupid to play 'good' mtg, eventually i wouldnt be surprised if everything is just a vanilla creature with 100/100 P/T for 5 mana, its gonna be freakin yugioh ;(

Give them a chance. This next block (HLD) is supposed to be different and interesting, so have hope.

If you're looking for a good challenge, my friends and I play a mode we made up called Arcane Melee, where you can't "cast" a creature spell. (You can still have one if a spell would give you one) We just have 60min card decks with instant/sorcery/land/planeswalkers. Most of the time we run mono colored and try to win with cards like {battle of wits}, {maze's end}, {Door to nothingness}, and things like that. The only rule is that you can't cast a creature spell by paying its mana cost.

I feel like that part of magics life was a result of the format at the time. Not that I don't enjoy that style but with the last 3 blocks they had some pretty heavy creatures, which makes sense and people build around it. Theros is a super heavy creature block. Wouldn't make sense otherwise. Maybe if they were to do a set in say a setting where heavy magic and instants would make sense and they go super heavy agro block then I could say they are dumbing down.
Creatures are a huuuuuge part of the game and in some blocks are even more so. Just look at the dark, homelands, and so on. That's dumbing the game down.
Plus in standerd you've got a lot of heavy spell card decks running only 1-4 creatures. Just happens to be that unless you play red, your spells don't tend to pressure your oppenant lol.
And for my last point in this super long winded post (sorry). Just look at future sight. That set was mad with complexity and hardcore players loved it, but it really hurt wizards sales. And to their credit they didn't overreact they did start to shy away from that kind of thing. Now it's not the same as just making a spell heavy set but I don't see them going back to those extremes again. Just like torment, future sight abd nameless others you'll get hints of those but you won't even get all of it.

...The 1999 World championship was between a RDW deck and mono-red artifact ramp. Perhaps a better example is needed? :P

Really? I was referring to the match between mono black necropotence, and Bant treetop village
