Title: why is this card good
Post by: AdamS on March 05, 2014, 04:43:57 PM
{remand} why is this used over a real counter spell when it only delays the target instead of getting rid of it. so why not use {Cancel} {Convolute} {Dismiss} or {Dissipate} or any other counter spell that gets rid of the target

It slows down your opponent without losing you any card advantage and costs 2 mana. 3-mana counterspells are not very playable, but this stops your opponent from doing what they wish to in a timely manner and has good interactions in counterspell wars and against flashback cards.

Living end is a deck based around cycling a bunch of creatures like {Monstrous carabid} and {street wraith}, then using {violent outburst} or {demonic dread} to cascade into {living end}, the only card in the deck with a cmc under 3 mana.

So I was having this discussion with a friend and this was my explanation.

So most modern games end roughly Turn 4 or Turn 5.. So let's say I {Remand} their Turn 3 spell.

T1:Spell
T2:Spell
T3: X - No spell because of Remand

Now my opponent has a choice. Either they 1.) Cast their Turn 3 spell Turn 4, putting them a turn behind, or they skip that spell and go to their Turn 4 spell, the same thing as if it was {Cancel}ed. Meanwhile Remand draws you a card, putting you ahead a turn in draws. So it does more, for less.

By sending the card back to their hand, if timed right, you basically time walk your opponent because they effectively do nothing. It also replaces itself. There's also the common occurrence of remanding a flashback spell which then the spell will be countered indefinitely and still be exiled so {remand} becomes a hard counter. The tempo is provides is just huge. Plus, it's blue.

I'd love for it to be black! That would be beautiful!

It's also used to bounce your own spell if you're losing a counter war. Gotta keep that snappy/resto alive, man!
