Purphoros is always good for token decks because his statix ability does 2 damage every time a creature enters the battlefield.. And molten birth is nice in tokens.. I played a mono red token deck and won games with only the purphoros, young pyromancer and molten birth combos

I really prefer {Selesnya charm} over {molten birth}

But for the combo in this deck, more creatures > better creatures. Assuming young pyromancer is out, With the charm you'd do 4 damage and get 2 creatures while with molten birth you'd be doing 6 damage and getting three creatures with a 50% chance to get to do it again.
