Title: Nivmagnus elemental
Post by: Bio beast on February 24, 2014, 08:09:12 PM
If you have 2 in play and cast 1 spell then exile it, do both of them get 2  +1/+1 counters?

No only one of the effects can actually exile the card for the counters

{Nivmagus Elemental} attach the card please! :) but no, you would not. That is an activated ability, so you would activate the ability for only one of the elementals, exile the spell, and that one would get the +1/+1 counters.

No. Exiling the spell is paying the cost for the ability, and getting the counters is result.

I'll use someone else's analogy (I believe it's Kaleo's): If you use 1 dollar to buy a 1 dollar item when there are 2 left, you don't get both. While the cost is the same, you only get one for paying the cost once.

Well, now you've got 3 answers. What everyone means by "attach the card" is to put curly brackets around the name of the card so it links to the card. quote Ibtrickey's post to see what all of us mean by that.

Thank you. Sorry about not linking the card. This is my first post.

No problem! Can't really expect someone new to know all of this.  Just learn for next time :)

Welcome to the forum, by the way :)

602.2. (http://imtgapp.com/forum/index.php?action=imtg;area=rule;number=602.2.): To activate an ability is to put it onto the stack and pay its costs, so that it will eventually resolve and have its effect. Only an object's controller (or its owner, if it doesn't have a controller) can activate its activated ability unless the object specifically says otherwise. Activating an ability follows the steps listed below, in order. If, at any point during the activation of an ability, a player is unable to comply with any of those steps, the activation is illegal; the game returns to the moment before that ability started to be activated (see rule 717, "Handling Illegal Actions"). Announcements and payments can't be altered after they've been made.

See the rest of 602.2 for a really in depth look at the process of activating an ability. You'll for sure get it after that :) and welcome! I'm pretty new here as well! These guys are nice.
