I don't trade over the interwebs or do much online shopping anymore after buying a ring of power from amazon that said the shipping would take a week and then not getting it till almost a year later because they messed up in their shipping centre

You do realize most sites like Amazon and Ebay allow you to report people like that and they will refund you your money, right? I do a lot of buying on the internet and very rarely have problems. Just buy from reputable sites like Starcitygames.com and Channelfireball.com. As for trading on here, I understand your aversion. I was afraid at first too, and made sure my first trade was with a mod, but I have done a lot of trading since and never had a real problem. In the end, your choice, but the internet is a really good tool for MTG players.
Yeah I know. I got a refund. But still, I'd rather not risk that happening again

We also have the "Middleman" feature where both sides mails their ends to the respective middleman (usually a mod) and once they get both ends they send out to the respective side. It takes a bit longer but is far more secure.
Otherwise check out the trusted trader thread and see if the person you would like to trade with is be there. If not, then you can ask them to send first. Or use a middleman.
