Title: If the card, safe passage, is played does it have protection against destroy?
Post by: Jennifer the Gatherer on February 22, 2014, 01:00:45 PM
If the card safe passage (which protects you or your target creature from all damage for that turn), if that card was played against a card that could destroy a creature (an enchantment to destroy target creature), would you be able to protect that creature? Logically if your card is destroyed, that means said card was hit for more than what the toughness was for that said creature. So, does safe passage protect it or does it not work because of the "destroy" part of the card attacking the creature?

{Safe Passage} protects from damage, destroy effects deal no damage so it would destroy.

Dealing damage equal to or greater than a creature's toughness: destroys.

"Destroy" effects, e.g. {Doom Blade}: destroys.

Reducing toughness to 0 or less, e.g. {Bile Blight}: does not destroy. The creature just dies. This is one way to kill indestructible creatures.

Dealing damage does not reduce toughness. If your monstrous {Fleecemane Lion} blocks an opponent's {Ash Zealot}, and that opponent then resolves {Drown in Sorrow}, your lion will not die.
