Title: Gainsay vs dispel
Post by: DirtyMustachio on February 16, 2014, 10:18:56 AM
{gainsay}
{dispel}

For sideboard and only at 2 either or

Main board I'm running
2 {dissolve}
3 {negate}

And sideboard I've got another 3 {nullify}
So i can swap based upon my matchup

I wanna roll with the aforementioned cards primarily against esper

But does gainsay help against any other matchups besides mono blue?

And will I even bother putting dispel in against anything other than esper because then the answer should be gainsay

Well the one blue instant stops a lot of instants

It depends on your meta. {Dispel} is better against the more popular mono black devotion, but {gainsay} is incredible against mono blue devotion (for obvious reasons) and is slightly better against esper control (hits pretty much everything dispel does, plus d-sphere and ætherling)

Wow both good answers

What would you say is better as a whole against the meta nationally if I traveled

I prefer  {Gainsay}

Well, I haven't gotten a good look at standard since BotG was added, so it may have gotten a shake-up with new cards, but from my understanding mono black is still going to dominate the format. And now it has {Bile Blight}, another target for Dispel (and {Drown in Sorrow}, which neither 1-mana Counterspell can target)

Again, take into consideration my lack of standard knowledge since Born of the Gods was added. The scene could be totally different now for all I know.

What is your deck?

I play Esper Control and tbh I think {Dispel} is by far the best counter in the format. It stops burn, Sphinx Rev., {Advent of the Worm} as well as every Counterspell. I side it in vs. the control mirror and Sphinx for X-1 where X is my mana and they {dissolve} and I laugh :P

If say just 2 more {Dissolve}
Two more hard counters that just hit everything. You have the other situational ones to swap around when needed, but in my opinion, a straight up hard counter just can't be beaten. Also holding 3 open mana makes them have to play around it regardless if you have it or not, which is really half the game of playing control.
