Post by: cltrn81 on March 28, 2012, 12:24:02 PM
Not sure if anyone ever mentioned this one.  Pretty effective control.

{sensei's diving top}+{counterbalance}

Edit: Shoulda named it CounterTop 😜

So let me seen if i got this. Player 1 plays a spell. Player B responds by paying the tops mana ability and puts a card thats the same MC as the card. After the top resolves counterbalance counters it.

Right?

Bingo.

The best part is you are always guaranteed to counter the first 1 cmc since you can tap the Top to draw a card and place the Top on the top of your library.    Say that 10 times fast

Don't forget, if you're using {Sensei's Divining Top}, then {Long Term Plans} becomes a blue {Diabolic Tutor}.  Also, being able to shuffle is great with CounterTop.  :)

I use this combo in my stone blade and Canadian threshold decks. It's a great way to lock the opponent down.

Could also integrate {archmage asension} into that somehow.

This is actually to slow for the current legacy meta. And you missed one key part of the combo and that's using fetch lands ponders ect to shuffle your library to get the right card on top. Also goes well with standstill because normaly if you counter a spell with standstill in play standstill will go on the stack with your spell and you opponent will draw 3, but you arnt casting anything with this combo.

Thats not true about standstill. Opp plays a spell. Its on the stack standstill triggers and resolves. Draw three. And before the first spell resolves but after standstill has resolved counter it

Yea I use the fetch lands to shuffle if I can't find the card the first go around.  {Brainstorm} works great to if you have the same CMC in your hand.

Few years ago this was decent, it's just too hard today to effectively control the meta with this combo. Your oppt has to be really far behind for you to be able to control them. Isochron + orim's chant with permission to back it is a more powerful lock than this, IMO. Trinisphere + tangle wire hurts harder too. Idk. Wash a fan of this, never had much trouble competing against the countertop decks. And yes, standstill is a massive amount of pressure
On your oppt, and the combo would be significantly hampered not having standstill up.
