Right so my friend just asked if you can 'counter' creature abilities?

"Counter target spell"

Is it possible at all?

Yes. A creature is a spell. The only things that aren't spells are lands. Anything but lands CAN be countered, but not spells that say "This spell cannot be countered"

Does this specify also to triggered abilities, for example {Bogbrew Witch}'s ability to find a {festering newt} etc..

No. It can only counter that if it says "counter target activated ability"

Fyi, this is an Activated Ability, not a Triggered Ability. Important distinction in many circumstances.

Very true. An activated ability has a cost, a triggered ability says "Whenever", "When" "If" etc
