Title: Combaaaaaat!
Post by: RDJDenley on February 06, 2014, 03:41:26 PM
Right, so I have now seen two ways people handle multiple blockers.

For example purposes, my 6/6 is blocked by three creatures, a 2/2 a 3/1 and a 1/1. My creature is ultimately killed due to the 6 damage being dealt to him. But does my creature, a) pick a single creature to inflict his 6 damage unto, or b) split his damage among the three blockers?

Its something that is now throwing me off completely and need some closure on the subject.

With green being a likely switch, this seems something I need to know!

Your 6/6 will kill all three of its blockers, with its damage divided as you choose (unless the blockers have banding, in which case your opponent chooses).

509.2. (http://imtgapp.com/forum/index.php?action=imtg;area=rule;number=509.2.): Second, for each attacking creature that's become blocked, the active player announces that creature's damage assignment order, which consists of the creatures blocking it in an order of that player's choice. (During the combat damage step, an attacking creature can't assign combat damage to a creature that's blocking it unless each creature ahead of that blocking creature in its order is assigned lethal damage.) This turn-based action doesn't use the stack.
Example: Vastwood Gorger is blocked by Llanowar Elves, Runeclaw Bear, and Serra Angel. Vastwood Gorger's controller announces the Vastwood Gorger's damage assignment order as Serra Angel, then Llanowar Elves, then Runeclaw Bear.

Good question!

Your creature will split damage between all of them. Not evenly though.

You will choose creatures in order, and assign lethal damage to one, then move to the next. Example:

Your 12/12 is blocked by a 6/6, a 5/5, and 2/2

You choose which to assign damage to first. You could kill the 6/6, the 5/5 or the 2/2. Normally people pick the 6/6. Then you have 6 more damage to distribute. You can choose the 5/5, or the 2/2. Naturally, the 5/5 is chosen. So you have 1 more damage to deal, which is dealt to the 2/2 and it survives. You could do this in any order of creatures, whichever you'd like dead

It's important to note though that all damage is dealt simultaneously. All creatures will die at the same time, and you are not deciding which dies first, just which takes what amount of damage

Hope that helps :)

An attacking creature doing damage to multiple blockers:  first, when blockers are declared, you as the attacking creatures controller decide what order you will apply your creatures damage in. In this case lets say the 3/1, the 2/2 and the 1/1. Next combat progresses to the damage phase and you assign damage. The rules for this are pretty simple. You have to assign damage to the creatures in the order you chose and you have to assign lethal damage to the first creature before you can assign it to the second. Let's assume that nothing was done from assign blockers to the damage phase. Assign 1 damage to the 3/1, 2 damage to the 2/2 and your last 3 damage to the 1/1. You could just as easily assign damage 3 2 1 and all his creatures would still die, but you can't assign 4 1 1 because you have to assign lethal damage to the 2/2 before you can assogn it to the 1/1.

Another scenario: opponent casts [healing salve] on his 3/1 (prevent next 3 damage to him). Now you can still assign damage 1 2 3 because the 1 damage is still lethal even though it will later be prevented and it will live through combat. If he instead casts [giant growth] on the 3/1, it is now a 6/4 and you now have to assign damage 4 2 0 and his 1/1 will survive combat

I hope this clarifies things for you.
