{Serra Avatar} and {Basilisk Collar} would both make nice additions - and work oh so well together, too!

You might want to add some extra card draw, too. {Mind Spring} and {Blue Sun's Zenith} are blue EDH staples. {Bloodgift Demon} works great for a lifegain deck, too. {Necropotence} is incredibly powerful, but not modern-bordered like you asked.

{Exsanguinate} is another one.
