So, I'm trying to start playing a little more competitive magic. (This definition of competitive will sound wierd to most of you, but basically all I play is casual). For me "competitive" basically means a real dci sanctioned tournament. Lol. Anyway, the highest level event I've been to is game day (I said my definition of competitive is different that yours ;) ).
When I was there, I found I didn't know many of the tournament rules at all. For example, one of my opponents told me he could call a judge on me for marked cards because my sleeves were facing different directions, I had never heard of this before.
So, I'm looking for quick tips on things that are easy to mess up on. I don't need all the rules, I'll read/skim through the tournament rulebook sometime if I have the chance, but just stuff you think someone new to this type of play would really need to know. Thanks in advance! :)
Go in blind, learn from mistakes of how you play
Don't play land if you don't need to. That land could be a Gods Willing, Sphinx Rev etc, but if you play it as a land, well it's a land.
Expect removal
Don't expect to win all the time

Thanks for all the advice, good help.
However, I was more talking about stuff like tournament rules. The sleeve directions is an example of what I'm talking about.
I think expecting to win is not my problem, expecting to win a single match with my mazes end deck is. :P that was what happened last game day. Six rounds, the only one I won was the one where I got a bye. And I only won 2 games the entire time....
1. Go to have fun! Joke with your opponent and laugh :D
2. Even if it looks weird if you have to do it do this: when they pass turn you say "ok, Untap, Upkeep, Draw" do this (with the appropriate actions) and you'll get it eventually :P
3. If you play Instants make sure to wait until they say pass turn then look at your hand and if you can play something play it if not see #2
4. Know your own deck. I played {Wild Beastmaster} which has a tricky ability but I knew exactly what the card did so other people couldn't screw me over!
5. TAKE YOUR TIME!!
6. Breathe and repeat #1
7. Take home 1st and send me your winnings!!! :P

I always make sure to use/do untap upkeep draw, and it's always the first thing i teach a new player once they can understand it ;)
About 7.... Maybe.... ;)
Thanks!
Listen to the common mistakes podcast from limited resources. It is a huge help :)
If they pick you up for something menial like sleeve direction, lean across the table and lightly slap them. If they're being that anal about things like that, they probably shouldn't be playing a community game like Magic.

Dont belittle potential cheating methods. Wizards takes cheating very seriously all the time, intentional or not so it sets a fair enviroment for all and destinquishes the game as the high profile, well organized, and ethical game that it is.
Having other playable cards in your deck box is a game loss. (Dont use tokens that are really basic land or put those cards your buddy gave you in the same place as your deck)
Drawing extra cards is a game loss so always be careful an wait for responses before drawing a card.
If you see something wrong in a game (even if you are not playing) mention and fix (if it's your game) or call a judge. Seeing something wrong and not saying anythig is cheating because it gives someone an advantage that you can prevent from influencing the outcome of the game.
The rules do say to SHUFFLE your opponent's deck when they present for a cut. This rule is not enforced, but if they are stacking their deck in any way and you have cut the deck before a judge gets involved technically it's your fault for not shuffling their deck. Now if you suspect a stacked deck then dont cut just call a judge.
Please no drinks without a sealing lid.
Go to gatherer and read the rulings at the bottom of each card description for every card you are playing.
Im sleepy so thats all for now. Hope it helps.

Helps a lot, thanks ;)
I was wondering, is it ok to sleeve custom tokens with a different sleeve than I am playing, and tape/glue the tokens to basic lands? (There would be nothing of the basic land visible.)
No don't do that. He mentioned in a previous post that you can't use basic lands as tokens. You know when you get those silly cards that have no meaning in your booster packs the ones that could be a token but are just simply a silly Duals of the PWs advertisement. Use those!
And do always sleeve your tokens in different sleeves. Which reminds me, always have extra sleeves incase one becomes damaged (aka marked).

oops. whatever, the deck that uses the tokens i already put on basic lands isn't competitive enough anyway.
now i know for next time though, thanks.
