Title: Devotion question
Post by: respawned on January 22, 2014, 07:25:26 PM
Just wondering if cards like {nightveil Spector} will count as 3 or 6 towards devotion of the new gods

Try thinking of it this way if it helps:

When something checks for devotion, it goes through mana symbol in the casting cost one by one. If it's not the desired color, it ignores it and goes to the next symbol. If it is the desired color, it crosses or checks it off, tallies it as 1 devotion, and goes to the next symbol.

In the case of hybrid mana symbols, you can get this most common question resolved with this way of looking at it:

Example) {Mogis, God of Slaughter} is counting for devotion. The player has {Exava, Rakdis Blood Witch} and a {Rakdos Shred-Freak} in play. Mogis needs 7 total Red and Black devotion to be a creature. First, Mogis looks at himself. It sees the colorless mana and asks "is this red or black?" Nope! Ignore it and move on. It sees the red. "Is this red or black?" Yes! Red is indeed red. Same thing with black, same process with Exava. Then, for the Shred Freak. It asks for the first hybrid symbol "Is this red or black?" Yes, red and black is definitely red or black, so it checks that symbol off and goes to the next symbol, where it does the same thing. This leaves you with a total of 6 devotion to red and black (2 from Mogis, 2 from Exava, 2 from Shred Freak). Mogis is not yet a creature.
