Title: Strionic Resonator + Heroic
Post by: McAtoms on January 17, 2014, 04:11:17 PM
Hoping to get some clarification on using Strionic Resonator.

Let's I have on the board:

1 {Agent of the Fates} (Heroic - When you cast a spell that targets him opponent sacrifices a creature)
and
1 {Phalanx Leader} (Heroic - When you cast a spell that targets him all creatures you control get a +1/+1 counter)
and
a {Strionic Resonator} (Copy triggered ability you control)

Here is the question:
Can I use the Resonator to copy Agent of Fates triggered ability to Phalanx Leader and then cast a spell that targets Phalanx Leader thus triggering BOTH abilities off one creature and resulting in giving both creatures a +1/+1 counter AND causing my opponent to sac a creature?

If so: Does that ability stay attached to that creature forever or just till the end of turn/phase/it resolves/whatever...
If not: Why not?

The resonator copies an ability on the stack, it doesn't copy text from one card to another. What you can do with it is copy one of the heroic triggers while it is on the stack, so you could put two counters on your creatures or you could force your opponent to sac two creatures.

Reading your question also leads me to make the additional comment:  heroic abilities aren't spells, so they can't trigger heroic. I'm sorry if you already knew this but I wasn't sure and just wanted to mention it.

No, you can't, and here's why: Abilities can only be copied while they are on the stack. For example, you can trigger the leader and then copy the +1/+1 ability while it's on the stack, giving each creature 2 +1/+1 counters, or you can trigger the agent and copy that ability while it's on the stack, making opponents sacrifice two creatures, but you can't give the leader the agent's ability.

I'm with ya on the Heroic abilities not being spells.

Just confused on text for strionic.

I mean the way it seems to be is that the word "triggered" in this card text refers to both the verb or action of the ability being "triggered" AND as a noun (as in the ability it triggers must be a "triggered ability").

In other words - This copys an ability that ALREADY HAS BEEN TRIGGERED and that ability MUST BE ONE THAT USES WHEN, WHENEVER or AT.

Seems a bit misleading to use one word as both the verb and the noun.

In addition, {Strionic Resonator} taps as part of it's cost. You would only be able to copy ONE triggered ability with it, ONCE, as you would be unable to pay the tap cost a second time after you tap it for the first usage. This is, of course, barring any unconventional means used to untap the resonator between uses, such as {Galvanic Key} or {Clock of Omens}.

There is no way to combine multiple abilities into a single ability.

or to untap it in standard, {kiora's follower}.
