Could you make an option on posts to follow them? Like, if you wanted to know when someone posted to a thread. Similar to the replies button, you could pull up a list of the unread threads you are following
If you reply in a comment you'll notice a notify me box to tick above the text input field.
I was thinking something like that, but if you don't want to reply and disturb the conversation just lurk and get notifications
