Title: Pre-Con Decks
Post by: Agrus Kos, Enforcer of Truth on January 12, 2014, 01:43:27 PM
Hi, I have a friend who wants to get into EDH and I want to know your opinion: What is the best preconstructed deck and which one is the easiest to upgrade/customize?

Oloro probably, mind seize is good as well but expensive to buy and probably to customize too

I'll second this. Oloro's Esper deck works really well right out of the box, and a few minor tweaks (like {Archangel of Thune}) can turn it into an absolute monster.

Mind Seize is the same way (Works better with Nezerek as commander over Jezela IMO) but thanks to {True-Name Nemesis}, the deck has a hefty price tag.

In third I'd say a tie between Bant and Jund. Both are great starting points for really strong decks, but they need a little work.

In last I'd have to put Naya. It has some really fun cards, but it's missing something as a deck.

Alright, thanks to both of you. I'll pass this along to my friend and see which deck he chooses. I'll probably be back in a day or two to ask about specific cards to upgrade a deck.

I think it depends on their play style most. If they usually play a certain way getting colors that can fit a certain play style easier would actually be a better investment.

I'll try to convince my friend. The Kaalia one would be great.

Prosh was by far the best precon... And is one of the easier to build on ... If they already have a good collection then oloro isn't bad

Yeah, if you include the old commander decks, Kaalia's deck is great right out of the box. Ricky's needs some fidgeting but is a great starting point. Ghave's is so-so. Zedruu's needs a pretty good amount of adjusting, but has a unique style to it that might draw certain players in. And I can't even remember the last one, so it must not have been that impressive lol

Ah, right, Mimeoplasm! thanks! Great card, but I don't remember the deck with it being especially impressive.

Well, except for including edric and the other commanders it really wasn't

I can attest to the Riku portion, animar also makes a great commander, if you're centering your deck being creature heavy. Same deck.

Riku is an amazing commander... My favorite edh deck is my riku deck.

It really just depends on what your friend thinks I guess. How they like to play and their favorite color combination.

i think derevi is the most powerful general printed in the set. even turns terrible cards like {dismiss into dream} into targeted removal combos. then prosh, then oloro. oloro is really good until someone drops a {sorin markov} and then hes pretty bad.

If you can find one available still, I've had great fun with Counterpunch vs Eternal Bargain.

Oh don't get me wrong, he's my favourite commander as well, but it took a lot of work to get him to where I wanted, completely diverging from the purpose of that deck was built. What does your friend usually play? What's his play-style? That's the question you should look into and work from there.

I bought a precon BANT deck
Great synergy but if you're playing against any EDH geeks the precon decks just don't have that finisher touch.

The power hungry (Jund) pre con with Prossh is a great deck as is, IMO. I'm using {Shattergang Brothers} as a commander and found myself using lots of the cards from the pre con. Also it's the least popular so you'll still be able to find them at stores. You can snag one at target for $20 too!

Ugh prosh is so broken in commander. Everyone now plays him and infinite kobolds

Not broken... But I agree .. Boring haha

I also built a shattergang bros goblin tribal deck ... Although I kept very little of what the original deck had... Even switched out the silly new art sharpshooter for the original lol
