Title: thinking about doing this
Post by: rarehuntertay on January 09, 2014, 06:43:36 PM
Since i only go to my LGS about once a month, I'm thinking each time i go picking up a playset of 2 different shock lands. That way in about 4 months, I'll have the full 40. Good investment or no?

Do you or will you need them to play in the future? If yes:grab'em. If not, get something you need, magic isn't an investment.

So true. Look at all the old sport cards you used to collect. Check their value. My ken Griffey and mark McGwire rookie cards were gonna pay for my retirement.

In a way. Like it still is a collectible game if you invested in Black Lotus back when they were under a $100 you'd be golden now! Or if you got Fetch lands when they were $8 you'd have made some money!

I play magic to play but I can see magic also as an investment?

Speak for yourself bub. Some of us make money off magic. Haha

The only ones who make serious money from magic (singles, sealed, or otherwise) are stores. If you want to invest, look at stocks or something more liquid than inflated cardboard. Get the cards you need to play, so you can actually play the game, rather than wasting cards away in a binder of {Deathrite Shaman}s.

It's a game. You can get away with calling it a collectible thanks to wizards sticking to the reserved list, but investment can only really be used to 20 year old rarities like BB power.'

The concerning thing I keep seeing is people speculating under the presumption that the game is going to grow forever, and by "investing", they just keep inflating the bubble, while at the same time creating a self-fufilling prophecy of growth.

TLDR: invest in something safer than cardboard that has faster growth to boot. Also I love making long and incomprehensible posts.

You could say the same about stocks. No gaurentee that those will be worth a year from now what they are today...

But that's the thing you are enjoying the game as long as people enjoy the game, the game will continue to live!! Sure it might not be a good investment but mtg cards are fun so let people collect for the fun of it
