Response?
A 2/2 blocked by a 1/2, right? Pass priority. Combat resolves and yours dies?
Before damage is dealt I tap plains for{gods willing}
Red
Hoplite gets +1/+1 counter now a 2/3
All damage is prevented to him this turn
Cackler dies
In response and before the heroic or the spell resolves, {magma jet} to kill it. Scry two. Ship them both. Pass.
20/4
It doesn't kill him
I've targeted him with a spell as I cast it
Heroic triggers
Spell doesn't have to resolve
You just wasted magma jet :)
You are incorrect. A player can respond to a triggered ability. Heroic is a triggered ability. Your guy dies while heroic (and gods willing) is still on the stack.
I can find the relevant rules if you need me to quote them.
Edit: Your right that the spell doesn't have to resolve when you cast the spell you put the spell on the stack. Then you put the heroic above it on the stack. You can counter the spell {counter spell} and heroic still works. You can counter heroic {stifle} and the spell still works. Or you can kill the creature and neither will work as there is no target.
I just went over a instance like this recently
Heroic is whenever you cast a spell that targets
Therefore I've selected to cast a spell targeting
Heroic triggers
Your response is here.
Gods willing hasn't resolved but heroic has triggered
Yes. Heroic triggered. Triggered and resolved are not the same thing. I responded to the heroic trigger before the heroic resolved.
It's an automatic whenever
You can't respond to a heroic trigger
You can respond to anything when you have priority, and unless its a mana ability, all activated and triggered abilities use the stack. How do you think {stifle} works if it can't respond to triggered abilities?
I'll find the rule for you. It may take a minute.
Says you're right
Ok
So I lose hoplite
No damage goes thru (blocker declared)
Correct. No damage to you. Your turn.
I didn't find the numbered rule in the comprehensive rules, but before PTQ, you may want to google: mtg salvation magic 101 triggered abilities
It explains it well.

Sure. Sorry for not listing cards in hand that turn.
Board is four mountains, rakdos cackler unleashed. Ash zealot. And, assuming it resolves, purphoros. My devotion is four.

Draw. Cast {burning tree emissary}. You take two from purphoros, who is now a creature. Cast {fanatic of mogus}. You take two from purphoros, and 7 from the fanatic. Any responses? What life does that put you at?
Ill concede
Ok. Game 2?
Do you have your sideboard set? before a PTQ, I highly recomend teasing your sideboard a lot. Not enough people do.
Gotta actually do errands and that whole issue with heroic kinda changes my mind on my deck
Yeah, now you can always have a second targeting card, or can play your spell after the magma jet. But it is an issue. GG +1
Yeah I was under the impression heroic triggers just happen without resolve responses. So it's too slow my liking and I'd also rather stick with simic or Selesnya instead of bant. I also need 4 supreme verdicts and 4 cyclonic rifts...which is a money sink I don't prefer.
Thanks for helping me play test!
No problem!
If your looking for a budget option, I have been brewing a budget list which probably isn't better than money decks, but is at least competitive. Its rakdos. Let me know if you want a list to test
Hey. Want to play?
