Title: How Did You Get Into MtG?
Post by: Vicadylan on March 22, 2012, 05:06:37 PM
I'm completely new to this game.  I played for about six months when I was probably.... 12?  I've always wanted to get back into it (I'm now 26) but I've sort of run with a different crowd and never knew how to go about it.  None of my friends are willing to play, and it's hard for my socially awkward penguin self to find players with the patience to teach me.  Anyways, just wondering what your experience was with being introduced to Magic?

My friends taught me how to player school, oarticularly Kiki jiki and mister Herbert, the foil sorin kid. Got myself started with a red green artifact breaker set from besieged, and fell in love! Not in that way though. 

Me and a friend of mine were at another friend of mine house and he taught us how to play. About a month later i finally got into it now we have like a 7 man group that plays. We always play FFA or THG.

My uncle came up to me one day and asked if I played magic, and I said no, so he asked if I wanted to learn how. He gave me some of his spares and I made a blue/black deck with random stuff in it, and it actually didn't do too bad. After learning the basic rules, I went on to explore the vast world of MTG, and it's now my favorite game, ever. In the 7 months I've been playing, I feel like I've been in love my whole life <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

I love this.  I don't know a damn thing about the game though.  I mean, I know the bare minimum but I don't know what a blue/black deck is or any of the other acronyms.  Hell, I don't even have a deck of my own right now! :(

I started playing mtg on my ps3. It's one of of best tutorials I've seen it show you the basic stuff you need and you get a better understanding of how the colors play. 👍

I've played through the tutorial you can download off the wizards website, but aside from the absolute basics it seems a bit lacking.  I don't have a ps3 or any other consoles .  I'm currently unemployed ao I had to sell them.  It hurts my soul just thinking about it.

Here's a tip for you then,
Mtg is a money pit. You can just keep spending monies on it and it will never be enough. :/

I couldn't agree more good sir. I started playing when Onslaught first dropped. I was fortunate enough to have access to a local comic and card shop that kept its doors open late for the nerdy street urchins. There I learned the ropes but sadly that experience was short lived after the law got wind that an adult was "supervising" children into wee hours of the morning (sometimes until the sun came up). Nothing happened like they made it seem by it was enough for the parents to want the shop closed. Course when you're 13 year old doesn't come home til after sunrise I suppose I could see why they were upset. After that I semi-ceased playing all together and about a year ago sold all my cards and almost gave up hope I would find more players again (so sad... Lol) lately however I've started up again playing with my co workers on breaks and have already sunk so much money into my decks.. I guess that was my point all along... Haha sorry for the life story guys, nice to meet y'all as well.

Actually there's a comic/gaming shop just down the road but I'm nervous about going in there and learning the ropes from a bunch of hardcore tabletoppers.  Im sort of an athletic dude and I don't know, they intimidate me hahaha.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Magic the Gathering, lol. This is my first post on this forum, so this is quite a fitting thread fir me to post. [Warning, will be a block of text]
Anyways, I started a little under ten years ago, around Middle School. Learned the basics and had games around lunch break. At that time, I played other TCGs like YuGiOh and Pokemon, but pretty much ceased all forms of TCGs after I graduated Middle School. I have recently restarted again in the past year since my brother and his friends actually play MTG, so during breaks (we are in college at the moment... well his friends and I are) we have a casual game time either Friday or Saturday night into the next day morning. My first set of cards were hand me downs from friends back in Middle School... I can't actually remember who though... haha. Then I got my first booster pack and really got into the Kamigawa expansion (despite the criticism from players, but I liked the Japanese themes), and about last month is when I bought my own Innistrad and Dark Ascension boosters [loving the gothic theme]. So yeah.......

By the way, if you don't want to fork over a fortune and want something to start with,  I'd highly recommend one of the Event Decks. Then meet various players at local places or on this forum and have a quick game or so; everyone seems nice enough to help here. One of my friend just got into MTG and he made his first deck by going to a handful of Friday Night Magic sealed limited and he enjoys the drafting environment, although may vary depending on your local/attending FNM place I guess.

Well see now I had a friend introduce me and believe it was intimidating and you also have to be ok with people handing you your taint numerous times. It's true that in most card shops there is an air of "know what you want and what you're doing" but being straight up will usually divulge the inner workings of most card "scenes" MtG players tend to be very humble people with mean streaks, I.e. we take pleasure from schooling newbies who think they're hot s--t (as almost ALL MtG players think they are at some point in their "career"). Moral of the story, you ain't gotta lie to kick it. Walk in and watch a few hands (w/o being a shoulder looker) and read a rule book at some point are the only two pieces of advice I'll give. Like I said, MtG players are genually cool people, have no fear.

I started to play Mtg back in '94 when the game had just came out. My cousins and I were into D&D and went into our local comic/game shop, and the shop owner (Fred) started to talk to us about this new card game that was like D&D. He then gave us free packs and a rule book. I've been playing ever since.

Friends and I started playing 15 years ago when they called the fourth edition revised. On and off again since then.

A friend bought me a Merfolk theme deck and proceeded to thrash my little mermaids with his beefy decks. I've been trying to best him with blue and white decks for years now.
