Title: Should I just stop playing standard?
Post by: Rodeodoctor on December 28, 2013, 01:42:41 AM
I'm seriously thinking of just not playing standard anymore and solely playing EDH and limited now and again. Any cons to this? Standard seems to just be a money suck where you need to play one of the few top tier decks at a high price (which will quickly loose value) and forget about doing fun thematic stuff. For example, {Army of the Damned} was completely unplayable in standard but is a threat in edh where it is also extremely thematic not to mention cool as hell. Does this make me crazy?

I made this change as well. EDH is just more fun, even though I play competitively with it. Standard just got so lackluster after Devotion hit, and it just got unfun. It was just a bunch of people counting symbols :/

I've had much more fun with EDH, but I recommend keeping a 60 card casual so you can play with friends :)

In short: yes.

But for a longer answer: yes, you should.

I like to keep a standard deck at the ready so I have the option to play it, but EDH is where I really put my tender loving care in. I've never regretted not having a multi-hundred dollar standard deck. Just my fun homebrew. But I'll never give up my commander decks!

If you play EDH you will not regret it! :) but like gorzo said its nice to keep a standard deck around.

Thanks, kind of surprised at the almost unanimous agreement. Edh just feels like what I remember playing magic was like when I was a kid, standard just seems like everyone is playing preconstructed net decks. Sounds like my trade binder is going to get a lot of nice standard stuff in it soon.

Yeah, just play casual EDH, limited now and again, and maybe modern if you want to still play competitive because it can be cheap and doesn't change. But yeah, Standard is no fun at places that play competitively. The people at my LGS always play uncommon things, I've never seen one Esper or Jund standard deck.

I find standard fun if you have the card base. If you don't it gets super expensive.

I enjoy EDH as the deck is eternal, I have about 8-9 EDH decks and my girlfriend has 3. I may take one apart that lacks in play, but I doubt these decks will be taken apart.

Standard however, it gets boring playing the same homebrew vs net decks, so I made a 2nd bant heroic themed deck last night finally. Play testing got rid of {loxodon smiter} from my main board as he was too slow, but as a sideboard vs black or future dimir decks is an idea. I traded so hard for a set of 3 and now they haven't gotten any use other than lose value from $5 to $3. Hence why I wanted to use them so badly. Same with fleecemane, he may get kicked out also.

So yeah, standard is frustrating for sure. Just 1/2 decks is good.

No standard for me right now. I think that ship has sailed. It's all about EDH from here on out. Sure, it's expensive (when you're like me, and don't mind spending the money) but it's a pretty new experience every single game, you only need 1 copy of anything, and the decks feel really personal. Access to every card ever (minus the small banned list) makes it feel more like you're creating something, rather then selecting from a small pool of cards.

Regarding price I've found edh much cheaper. Only one copy of the expensive cards that will maintain value and everything else is usually dirt cheap. My most expensive cards seem to be ones that are currently playable in standard.

I think I'll also keep around some duel decks which seem to be a good intro to teach new players.

I experienced my first rotation with Innistrad rotating out and it broke my spirit as far as standard goes. Now that I have a better concept of money (as opposed to when I was 11-13 and my parents paid for everything during round one of my Magic life,) I can't justify spending a good chunk of money when it decreases in value a year or two years later. Unless its staples in eternal formats, of course. I never liked competitive play anyway, and most people I play with also have casual decks or don't mind playing a standard vs. casual game.

With that said, I played a few games of EDH on a borrowed deck a couple of weeks ago and fell in love, so now my energy and funds is going towards that.

Also I want to publicly give Dudecore props for his comprehensive guide to EDH. It has helped me out immensely over the past week. Awesome thing you did for the community.

Yeah I have jut quite every format besides edh. It holds value and fouling out a deck is a serious accomplishment in edh whereas standard it can be done by savvy trading and a few weeks search. I love that edh plays cards no one has ever heard of. I enjoy nothing more than someone killing me or another player with a card I have never wen heard of before. Edh is the eat format in magic and te most true tithe games original intentions

I quit standard in November 2012 and haven't looked back once...I've never been happier playing magic then playing EDH. I play modern, legacy, and vintage only cause I already had the decks and since I rarely have to get new cards for the decks I decided to keep them together...EDH is the formate I focus on most...I'm always building new decks...I think I have 16 now. All competive and multi-player style decks...there competive cause I like to win, but they aren't overly competive; just enough to win as much as I can.

I didn't play standard.  Just edh and a homebrew modern deck.  Sure I don't get why all new players like standard.  Money wise it is stupid (so is edh at times but that's besides the point) because you constantly are shelling out hundreds of dollars for a standard deck each block.

Maybe I'm the only survivor.

I'm on the same boat! Thinking about cashing my standard cards in now and investing more into my edh deck!

Standard is cheaper on MTGO. I played standard till recently, then recreated my Dromar EDH deck online. Been playing there. It's way easier to test and get games.

Playing competitive EDH can also get pretty {miserable}, letting you know from personal experience. The best way to play EDH is with enormous amount of players. 5+, at least 2 players playing blue. Bullet proof way to play fun* EDH.

Competitive EDH just makes people groan.

Just make sure you include a form of all enchantment wipes

I love standard, it's the format I play the most, and I love playing competitive, but all that said, I also love a good casual game of EDH with 5+ players. Right now I have about 7 EDH decks, and it's always fun playing with friends every day of the week with a different deck.
