Title: blockers?
Post by: particle on December 24, 2013, 12:23:20 AM
so i want to declare blockers. my creature spells have flash due to {prophet of kruphix}. i am wondering, can i declare a mana dork like {sylvan caryatid} as a blocker, tap him for mana to cast a new creature and also block with that. basically can i start declaring blockers, flash in a creature, then continue declaring blockers?

I don't believe you'd be able to tap him after you've declared him as a blocker
Because as far as I know
Tapped creatures can not block.

i know i can tap him after i declare him as a blocker because it only checks if hes untapped when you declare blockers, tapping later wont unblock him.

You can declare your blocker then tap for mana, BUT you only get one chance to declare blockers so you could play another creature with the mana made but you could not declare it as a blocker since you already declared
Blockers

First caryatid does not have haste and can not tap the turn it enters.

Second you can not delcare a tapped creature as a blocker, but you can tap a blocking creature before damage is dealt to it.

Third all attackers and then all blockers myst be declared simotaniously. You may not attack with a creature and then attack with another or block with one then later block with another. This is not yugioh.

Does that mean that creatures with flash can not attack or block after attacking about blocking has been established?

Flash helps you get creatures on the field during an opponents turn, which removes summoning sickness when it's your turn again. It also allows you to bring in a surprise blocker if you're a little overwhelmed.

I feel like the only use for flash is to cast a creature after attacking and blocking has been assigned so that they dont know what to expect. It just hit me, flash is just useful so you can cast creatures on an oppenents turn, but not to surprize them with a new attacker or blocker. Is this true?

You can still use flash to create a surprise blocker, you just have to do it before you declare blockers.  All flash does is allow you to cast creatures at instant speed. It doesn't create any new rules or affect any other rules.

Opponent attacks, flash in a 3/3 centaur, then block with the centaur. You centaur will still have summoning sickness, will still do its 3 damage during the proper phase or any other tricks that a centaur can normally do. The reason that it doesn't work in the scenario above is that you would be declaring blockers twice, when you're only allowed to do it once per combat.
