Title: Another lazav question
Post by: respawned on December 19, 2013, 03:44:17 PM
If {lazav, dimir mastermind} copies {kalonian hydra}, does he die?

Yes. If he copies a 0/0, he'll die at the next state check for having 0 toughness. He doesn't gain the hydra's ability's counters (he's not entering the battlefield, he's already on it).

He will live if something else is actively buffing his toughness, though. Such as a {bad moon} in play or if he has counters on him before he becomes a copy due to another effect.

Would {Bad Moon} work?  Or does {Lazav, Dimir Mastermind} become green when it copies {Kalonian Hydra}?

It becomes green

706.2. (http://imtgapp.com/forum/index.php?action=imtg;area=rule;number=706.2.): When copying an object, the copy acquires the copiable values of the original object's characteristics and, for an object on the stack, choices made when casting or activating it (mode, targets, the value of X, whether it was kicked, how it will affect multiple targets, and so on). The "copiable values" are the values derived from the text printed on the object (that text being name, mana cost, color indicator, card type, subtype, supertype, rules text, power, toughness, and/or loyalty), as modified by other copy effects, by "as . . . enters the battlefield" and "as . . . is turned face up" abilities that set characteristics, and by abilities that caused the object to be face down. Other effects (including type-changing and text-changing effects), status, and counters are not copied.

Use  {Gaea's Anthem}

You're right, my mistake! Forgot he wasn't really lazav anymore (just in name and hexproof/copy ability), no {U}{U}{B}{B} mana cost for bad moon to buff. Good catch!

But the principle is still there, hopefully that came through my blunder :) {Kaysa} or the like for + to green creatures (or a global + to creatures) would do the trick.

I fail to see a situation where you would want to copy Kalonian hydra. Am I missing something?

If Lazav has counters on him from another effect, and your whole team is loaded with counters, that attack trigger could be bonkers. That's about it, really. 9 times out of 10 (or more) copying the hydra would not be desirable.
