Title: Spells and devotion

Is there any way to mold the stack to make sorceries or instants count towards devotion for cards such as {grey merchant of asphodel}?

I don't think so, because the definition of devotion says "permanents you control."

Devotion only counts permanents anyway, so no. Unless a card stays on the battlefield after it resolves, it won't help your devotion.

What about cards with cipher. Those are exiled onto a creature does that count towards devotion?
