Title: Discussion!
Post by: xStrayKnightx on December 19, 2013, 02:37:13 AM
{Kaalia of the Vast} vs {Mayael the Anima}.
Which is the worst one to go against?

I went against a Kaalia deck today with my own Kaalia, and I gotta say, it was pretty simple stuff to deal with.

In that same game was someone running Mayael, and he trumped the game really fast, so now I have a special hatred for Mayael. XD

True story. They also sorta build themselves, not the biggest fan. I prefer commanders without a more obvious strategy of how their decks should be built. Unfortunately {B}{R}{W} has a shortage of options.

I built my kaalia as a control variant then I use kaalia at the end to end the game with a bomb or two, this reallllllly messes with people because its like the polar opposite of the normal kaalia tempo.

I've found the decks you have to watch out for are {{Jhoira of the Ghitu}}, {{Oona, Queen of the Fae}}, and .loving. {{Edric Spymaster of Trent}}
Agree with Jhiora and Oona, but I've never actually come across an Edric deck but can absolutely see why it's a ⚠️⚠️⚠️ deck.

I like that you didn't mention {Zur, the Enchanter}. He's really one to 'watch out for' anymore as people have learnt. Now he's just a "ugh, it's him. Here we go again" ... this coming from someone who runs one too though, lol.

And with the original question, I'm going with Kaalia purely on the consistent big fatty fliers she pumps out. Green instead is a worthwhile argument, but I don't find mana ramp a problem in EDH enough to use green when this is essentially what Kaalia does. Plus her color alignment allows {Infernal Plunge} and {Dark Ritual} type cards.

I think if build right, mayel is better. Kaalia and mayek both have the same stratrgy: cheat big things into play. The difference is mayel has green, so it can just hardcast the big stuff. Kaalia dies to a breath of wind, and ao does mayel. But the difference is that one deck can deal without the general, and one deck just sits there with a bunch of high CMC creatures in hand. Kaalia needs artifacts to ramp. Mayel gets artifacts AND ramp like {Nature's Lore} and {Skyshroud Claim}.

{Lighting greaves}
{Swiftfoot boots}
Or my personal favorite
{Whispersilk cloak}
her butt

{Dragon arch}
Speeds it up to

Also some artifact or enchant I can't think of that you tap two untapped of a creature type and put one into play from your hand without paying its mana cost

Kaalia is much worse. She comes down earlier and just like zur if you dont stop the first attack it's almost always game over. However if you can stop that attack then it generally makes for an okay game. Neither of those two do well when they cost {2} more.

As for Mayel, I honestly prefer {martha stewart of the wilds} for the constant flexibility and creativity available.

Neither.  {bill gates the enchanter} is the best commander

Friend has an Edric deck. It is literally just the following:
Ramp
Draw spells
Seed born Muse (and now prophet of Kruphix)
Counterspells
4 to 5 finishers such as {{Avenger of Zendikar}}
{{Capsize}}

The deck is pure evil. He literally sits there, draws cards, plays lands, represents no threat, capsizes anything that comes after him, and then just blows everyone out.

I.. Need... That... List...

I disagree in that Kaalia also gives the cards pseudo-haste and also gives you control over the fatty you cast. I've seen a lightning-greaved Kaalia bring down {{Rakdos the Defiler}}, {{Master of Cruelties}} (for lethal if they both hit), and any of the absolutely bonkers dragons or angels that wizards loves to print. With proper protection, Kaalia is really strong.
With proper protection yes, but mayel has access to the same protection, and the creatures don't need haste because of their good etb abilities. All you have to do to stop a kaalia deck is have an answer by turn 3 or 4 (depends if they get a signet/sol ring/whatever). Not hard. Mayel decks, on the other hand, see mayel getting removed as a minor speed bump. It won't try to recast mayel. It simple moves on and hardcasts everything.

Most Edric lists are the following:
Lands
A few counterspells
1-drops
A few 2-drops
{Gaia's Cradle} and ways to cheat it out
Edric

Play a lot of little dudes (with evasion), attack for a million, Tap out your normal mana playing dudes, then tap your cradle and play more dudes. Hope they don't have a {Supreme Verdict} or {Wrath of God}.
Edit: Some lists may be playing {Bident of Thassa} now as a sorta second Edric.
