So, I'm going to do a theros draft with a few friends of mine who are inexperienced drafters. A few may not have, even ever drafted before. So, I think I might start getting weird signals for certain colors (some of them aren't the best players either so may not recognize a good limited card). Has anyone here done a draft like that or have some ideas of things I can do to make sure my draft goes ok and I don't get cut off a color half way through? Should I try to take all cards of a certain color out of pack 1 and hope to get passed good cards back the other way pack 2?
Or am I overthinking this?
Everyone's thoughts and/or help are appreciated.
its very interesting. there are definitely pros and cons to sitting nearby a beginner. you might get two pack one pick ones if they pass you a bomb. they also will almost always completly IGNORE signals, which is unfortunate. i feel the best way to approach it is just to try to make them understand signals beforehand, but its usually hopeless...
Yeah, pretty much everyone there will be a beginner, so teaching signals won't work. I'm hoping some people open bombs and force draft around them, and so I'll be able to draft some colors pretty much alone :)
My friend and I were joking that if I get passed lightning strike/ magma jet and have to decide, I can just pick 1 and wheel the other ;)
Is getting rid of 1 color from a pack almost totally a good idea? That way i can try to force them into certain colors that I'm not in...
yes, although i would just say try to stay open until pack two see what you are getting passed and capitalize.
I was in a fnm theros draft for $5 due to the store trying to get core status. 10 man pod. Kid next to me didn't know how to draft. Talking about how he got a foil and was keeping it... It was a common... I pass my cards to left. Look at him and ask him where my cards are. He had 5 face up on table from pack thinking he got to keep as many as he wanted. I had to explain just one and pass.. He leaves the foil face up... Looks through cards again and then picks up foil and puts down {Hero's Downfall}.. I'm thinking to myself damn I could have had that. Later in draft I found out he also opened and kept a {Stormbreath Dragon}.. Needless to say he went RB, but he didn't even place in top 6.. I unfortunately ended up 3rd with 1 loss to 2nd place who also was with 1 loss to 1st place who was undefeated. The kid that drafted next to me had highest value draft... Needless to say, it was a crappy box.. 30 packs opened. Didn't see 1 pw think the best cards opened were {Stormbreath Dragon}, {Hero's Downfall}, {Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx}. Didn't see or hear anyone else talk about anything good... I should have bought the last 6 packs in box.....

Ok, I'll see if I can do this, though it might be a little hard... If I remember I'll post what happened tomorrow night.
so, i didn't do as well as i hoped. i first picked an {abhorrent overlord} and went into black white after i got a {divine verdict}, but the guy next to me was in black white, so i switched to black blue. but then someone passed me an {arbor colossus}, so i switched to green. then i accidentally passed a {nemesis of mortals} (still really mad about this :( ) in the next pack without seeing it, allowing the white/green guy next to me to get 2. so, i was stuck with my heavy 3 color deck ({arbor colossus}, {abhorrent overlord}, and a bunch of blue stuff). So, i had 1 scry land and an {omenspeaker} so i played 3 colors. i destroyed the first guy i played but then lost to the next guy in a really long game where at one time he had double {nemesis of mortals} and a {bow of nylea}... i lost when i fell for his bluff of a {defend the hearth}. i could have won but instead didn't attack and waited for my 2nd {sip of hemlock} which i never drew. I did gain 15 life in 1 turn off {cutthroat maneuver} though, that was fun...
basically, it was a really weird draft.
