Title: Your very own deck technician
Post by: Destore117 on December 10, 2013, 12:09:18 AM
So me and my friends we all have our own respective play styles and such. But any time any of them wants to build a new deck, they come to me to help them focus the deck and cut out unneeded cards. Im basically my friends' deck technician! So I was wondering, does anyone else have a friend that they immediately go to to help design and build decks?

I usually go to my friends that have been playing longer than I have and do very well in sealed and standard tournaments. I don't always do exactly what they recommend, but I like getting insight from more experienced players!

Watching matches on youtube has been my best teacher. It's a good reality check to a new player when you learn how quickly some matches can get decided and for what reasons

When I come up with a new idea I bring a shell to my buddies and have them assist me in fleshing it out. We team deckbuild a lot.

Two heads are better than one! You should always ask for feedback and ideas for decks. I help quite a few of my friends and I have them help me too

That would be me in my group... I'm tied for playing the longest, but know far more than anyone else :)

The guy who taught me is who I go to for deck advice. He is a better player but I tend to build the better decks. We help each other out all time with decks and playing.

Noah and I have each other right at home to help with decks! It's very convenient.

Wow, its funny that this thread was posted tonight. I was just at Westwinds (a choir) practice and a Magic friend of mine came up to me with a {G}{B} decklist. In his sideboard he a playset of {Illness in the Ranks} "for token decks." I said two words, "{Ratchet Bomb}."

My wife and I are the same way.

Though I just recently taught her how to play a couple of years ago, she will come to me for assistance, and I get her cards for her as the collection we have is the both of ours. We don't seperate it for the both of us at all.

Sometimes I will go to my friend (Greg) also my manager, who will help me with a competitive deck if I am going to SCG.

I'm the guy in my group that makes the best decks.  Normally it turns into 4v1 with me being the one, and I still win, because I distract them long enough to get in my game winning position.  No one comes to me for deck building advice because they want "fun decks", not "tournament decks".  I say it's no fun unless you win.
I used to do that with green stomp decks and Goblins but then my friends starting using removal....

I used to converse with friends about decks, but I've gotten to a point of me having enough knowledge on my own that OTHER friends come up to me and ask for deck-building advice. I'm currently helping a friend make a {R}{W}{U} deck with {Numot, the Devastator} as Commander.

👆👍

For the most part. I bounce ideas off of other people as well sometimes.

This is actually part of what started Rogue T3ch. I was trained to play competitively by Dennis but when he took a break I kept strong and became known as one of the most innovative yet competitive deck builders. When he came back I met Danny and they both saw that I could help greatly in deck building where they could help a lot more with card stock that I could then trade up as I had done since the beginning through smart speculation based on overlooked good deck ideas that I followed through on. Best examples were {geralf's messenger}, {hellrider}, {angel of serenity}, {sphinx's revelation}, and of course {voice of resurgence} all traded for at a fraction of their peak or even current price. My favorite part about being that guy though that people (not just the team) come too for deck ideas and tweaks is that i consistently get to see people growing as deck builders in their own rite. Much more often now my suggestions are met with a "yeah, I thought of that but..." and that's a great feeling both to have been any part of that growth but also to have new heights to aspire to.

When members start winning instead of just top 8ing PTQ's I'll be sure everyone knows about it and where we'll be traveling.
