Title: Looking for preference
Post by: Shadridium on December 03, 2013, 12:30:14 PM
Hey everyone, I've been thinking about making a mono blue commander deck and I'm split between {azami, lady of scrolls} and {memnarch} what are your opinions on each. I'm curious to hear your opinions.

I have an Azami deck. I think she's a lot better because if the sheer amount of draw power. You can even play memnarch in your Azami deck because its a wizard, lol.

Azami in EDH is way more powerful, full it with awesome Wizards and you're good to go, and is pretty fast. However if you want combo/artifact Memnarch is better ;)

In my opinion menarch would be better as a card in your deck when running esper. Mono blue doesn't have as good of artifacts in my opinion

I thought if you used {memnarch} as your commander all spells in the deck had to be colorless b/c the commander is colorless?  Therefore, you couldn't have any blue spells.  Right?

His activated ability is blue making his color identity blue.

I didn't know that.  Thanks for the information!  In that case I like Memnarch.

Azami is a combo deck, too... It's called {Mind Over Matter} + {Laboratory Maniac} = I win?

Edit: {Sigil Tracer} (and 3 other Wizards) + {Turnabout} for infinite tapping/untapping; {Sage of Fables} + {Glen Elendra Archmage} for infinite {U}: Negate; {Merrow Levitator} + Azami and any U spell = blue {Glimpse of Nature}. Not sure that I need to keep going.

But Azande decks aren't typically built just to combo ;)

I'm not sure whose Azami decks you've been looking at, but that's how all the good Azami lists are.

The good ones are.

Thank you. Azami is almost exclusively a combo/control general because of her draw power.

If you like comboing out as soon as possible, thinking ahead, and not interacting with the board, go with Azami. She is an excellent combo commander and very fun to play. It's one of those decks where the true skill does not lie in the playing of the deck. It lies in the building of it. If you build it well, you will be able to combo off sooner. There are, of course, more controling, counter-heavy decks that run a lot of wizards, but the best Azami lists run more spells than wizards...much more. And they focus on comboing ASAP.

If you enjoy ramping with artifacts high above your opponents, while at the same time controling which spells resolve and which ones do not, and eventually smothering your opponent in sheer card advantage while stealing all of their stuff, Memnarch is the way to go. While a memnarch deck will not really combo off and win the game in one turn (although it can...{Basalt Monolith} + {Power Artifact} + {Blue Sun's Zenith}), it will take multiple turns in a row, ending with you holding many cards and your opponent left with nothing. So even though it isn't a combo deck, it feels kind of like one.

The main difference between memnarch and azami is interaction. Memnarch interacts with the board state a little more than azami, though different builds interact at various different levels. I have seen extremely interactive counter-heavy Azami decks, and balls-in combo memnarch decks.

Hope this helps your decision. Oh and by the way, you can have Azami+Mind over matter in a memnarch deck and you can have memnarh in an azami list! They may be different commanders but they share a common blue nature, and they work well together!

Anyone interested in checking out a game with my Azami list, take a look at this link (http://imtgapp.com/forum/index.php?topic=31312.0). Just played a wall game that ended in me comboing for the win.

+1 and I like your explanation. My Azami list actually has roughly the same, if not slightly more Wizards than spells. That's because my EDH meta is super uncompetitive. I used to have the {Sensei's Divining Top} + {Future Sight}/{Magus of the Future} + {Helm of Awakening}/{Etherium Sculptor} combo in my deck, but I had to take it out because my friends like games to go longer. Even without it I still win 99% of EDH games at my shop.

Thanks a ton guys I love blue and I didn't have a hard combo deck yet and sense I already have a Karn edh a second artifact edh would be a little redundant. I will be looking into tracking down some of the stuff I need then getting started.
