Title: Competitive or casual or both
Post by: Agrajagzz9 on December 01, 2013, 11:55:41 PM
Ok so I am asking for opinions on several things here first and foremost I have a prossh edh deck build right now and it is good. It does not ever go infinite and it does not have food chain in the deck but it typically kills a table before turn ten consistently. For example it won a 5 player game through 3 board wipes and a humility. After that game itade me consider wether or not it was too good. I like the deck and I have fun but I want a game of edh where I make decisions and interact and the game is fun for everyone. Is there a like where a fair deck is too good?

Second I am considering changing the deck into shatter gang bros because it is synergistic, fun, and political. I think it is a great just for fun general. What are everyone else's thoughts on him vs prossh in a casual meta.

Lastly do you think edh is better to build a deck to the best if my ability and within my standards (I believe in not infinite combos for example) or should I build a deck interactive and at the power level of my play group. There are one maybe two players with expensive cards and limitless recourses for deck building but the average joe is somewhere between budget Johnny and a tuned well thought out deck with cards under 50$. I would like to know thoughts

1. I love players like you (and me) that see EDH for its casual way and not for who gets their infinite combo off first! Lol

2. I feel the same way with my {Uril, The Miststalker} deck I get a T3 or T4 Uril out and T5 I'm swinging lethal at somebody it's not fun!

3. So, I built Gorzos Madness EDH deck ... Possibly THE ABSOLUTE best casual EDH deck it has hardly any win cons but its just crazy cards like {Thieves Auction} {Warp World} etc just make it phenomenal!!

4. If you want a fun EDH commander just look at the colours you like on the database, look at the commanders pick one and go from there! Try to build it without looking online. Just pick 99 cards that you like then check online for changes.

5. Post your EDH deck here so we can see it

There are many opinions, but ultimately it boils down to ...

Don't bring a gun to a knife fight if you want the fight to be fair.

Don't bring a knife to a gun fight and expect to win.

Know which fight your getting into and be prepared... Just my 2 cents.

When prizes are on the line, I play VERY competitive.

When it's just for fun, I have been known to play everything from group hug to silly atog tribal decks.

I will post my prossh list tomorrow but yeah I agree I really like jund and currently I have all of the mana base for jund which is why I considered the switch to shatter gang bros. I dislike the other jund generals accept for maybe adun oakenshield

An right now prossh feels like bringing a tank to a knife fight. Everyone knows I am the biggest threat. They just can't ever interact with me enough to stop it. I just recast prossh and continue with my buisness maybe try a junk tokens like ghave or dega commander of some kind

But I agree with te above posts any recommendations for 3 color generals to play?

You can have a lot of fun with {Kaalia of the Vast} as well, provided the people you play with don't always groan and scoop after a few turn cycles.

I was gonna start post something along these lines just before I saw this one.

I find it super interesting how much variance there seems to be in what players design their EDH decks to do. It seems to me like constructing decks in this format takes peoples' natural Timmy/Johnny/Spike tendencies and magnifies them. I can understand everybody has different things they enjoy getting out of the game, and winning is often one of them, but there is a certain point at which people can lose touch with how their play choices affect the overall mood of the gathering. I've read it all over that "EDH is a casual format" but I feel like maybe people should try to remember that a multiplayer game is also social interaction, and your actions and decisions tend to reflect your character and create impressions whether you intend to or not.

I have an EDH deck that has a bunch of chaos and game altering enchantments that kind of shatter the idea of planning, but people seem to enjoy playing against the deck because all the effects are symmetrical (they affect me just as much as everybody else) so it's not as though I'm gaining huge advantages through them.

Anyway I'm not sure where I'm going with this.
Build decks that do silly powerful things that don't necessarily help you win the game, but make the game more interesting and engaging for all players involved. Seems more fun than winning in any sort of predictable manner, at least to me. But that's just how I've been feeling about it lately.

Fun trumps all in commander land. That is my stance and it is why I love the format.

I've heard it many times when playing. When deciding what spell to cast this turn, I hear "I have a smart option, and I have a funny option. I have to go with the funny one."

You don't see that in other formats. And everyone at the table has a good time because of it.
