Title: Lack of a good story...
Post by: Metalxdelights on November 27, 2013, 09:06:41 AM
Anyone that knows me well knows that I absolutely love video games and I own multiple systems. More than anything I enjoy playing RPGs, FPS and MOBAS. In the past two to three years a lot of video games have been released that really lack a good story and it upsets me. It just seems like a lot of video game companies are putting their main focus on the multiplayer mode and neglecting the story/campaign mode.

Great games with a good story: Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, The Walking Dead, and The Last of Us just to name a few...somewhere in the middle I'll add GTAV. The game was worth the release date pushback and I appreciated the story but it just felt short to me, then again they upped the anty on the multiplayer mode. The biggest disappointment for me personally with my experience in playing the game is Call of Duty. The multiplayer is great, I love it but I don't think there has been a good story since MW3. COD:Black Ops gave me the worst experience when it came to the campaign mode. My experience level is veteran, I finished the game in a week or so and I was so disappointed in the ending. You arose from the water and you are congratulated, "You did it mason" and then BAM! Zombie mode. It just went straight into it and left me feeling like I didn't finish the game lol

What are your opinions on this topic? Are my expectations too high?

I'd have to say I agree, I really like a good story in a game and would prefer a less polished game with a better story than a visually/technically perfect game with no story. I've totally quit the CoD series for that exact reason, I don't play multiplayer shooters that often and so a $60 game for a 6 hour campaign that isn't that deep is totally worthless to me.

Of course a good story doesn't apply to all games, I also play games like Dota 2 and open ended games like Terraria and Minecraft, but I totally get where you're coming from.

Good stories are why I stick to JRPGs, and other games with stories that are very good.  Sometimes it may take a couple of games to gget the story really good, but that's ok.  I've given up on fps shooters (Bioshock, and last of us not included) simply because the story gets to be predictable.

Although I agree with the fact that it is good to have a game with no story every once in awhile.  It feels somewhat as a break for me. :)

One trend I've found in games that I don't like is they give you some sort of ability to see enemies through walls. The Last of Us, the Arkham series, Assassin's Creed, Dishonored, and even the last two Elser Scrolls. While it is helpful, it dumbs it down a bit when you know exactly how many enemies you're about to face.

When I play contemporary games for very long  I have take a retro break. Give me fallout 2, ultima 7, or King's Quest 5. (Try GOG.com) I agree that story has stepped out of the spotlight to allow for more emphasis on gameplay and graphics.

My hope is that indie games on green light, kickstarter, etc. will continue to flood the market with great stories.

There is word on the internets that the incredibly creepy website that popped up recently...

www.thesurvivor2299.com (http://www.thesurvivor2299.com)

...is a stunt hinting to the announcement of Fallout 4 (the website can be traced to Bethesda)

I have my fingers crossed for a good story there. I love a good plot, and I've been missing them as well.

Either we get an awesome game announcement, or we just received the code name of a Russian nuclear attack on America, and when it will happen for christmas this year.

Either way, I'm intrigued.

I live in dallas and I'm 30 minutes from both Id and Gearbox software. I've done play tests for them both recently and they give out awesome gamer swag! I even went to the Aliens: Colonial Marines launch party ^_^  So if you live close or you're willing to travel, sign up for their playtest program!

Aww bummer! :(

If I figure how to link pictures here I'll share some of the stuff I've gotten from both. I can't discuss the games I tested though...I signed NDAs and I'd like to avoid "attack lawyers"  lol xD

I'm going to Dallas for four days Saturday with my wife. Can you recommend some shops that's a healthy mix of comics, Magic, and nerdy paraphernalia?

The perfect spot would be on Inwood Rd., two of my favorite places are there Zeus comics and Common Ground games. They are conveniently located right next to each other. Im a regular at Zeus comics, Richard, the owner is amazing. He goes out of his way to get things for you that he doesn't have in his shop and everyone there is really friendly. Common Grounds Games is a new spot that just opened up, the have board games and magic related things galore. You can even go there to relax and try out games. There are always people there so bring your magic cards! King of the back issues would be Titans comics, they also have great statues and action figures too. Just beware that Jeremy the owner is a little weird at first with new customers. Last but not least check out Keith's comics, he owns several shops in DFW. I go to the mockingbird location. It's a bit unorganized but I always luck up on the coolest finds...it just takes some searching.

Very nice! Thanks for the recommendations. I've been to Titan before. Do any of the other stores have sizeable TPB selections? I'm more a fan of volumes rather than singles. Knock em all out in book.

I'm looking to hit up some comic stores, Good Records, and Guitar Center while I'm there. And unfortunately the hell on earth that is Northpark.

They so but not nearly as much as Titan comics. I so suggest that you go to the Half Price book store right near Northpark. If you're going 75 north, exit wast northwest hwy and keep right. They've expanded their comic book and tpb section and lowered their prices a lot and you can't beat half off cover price comics.

And I feel your pain about having to go to Northpark lol. Saw a movie there last week and paid  $40. >_<

I've noticed this trend of focusing mainly on multiplayer too, even Bethesda is falling for it with ESO, but a good story is really what drives me through a game as well. I am dissapointed with recent CoD storylines as well, the best part of single-player BO2 is the Avenged Sevenfold Concert honestly. Path of Exile is a new steam game that is free to play and has a good story IMO and is everything Diablo 3 should have been. Would recommend it to anyone who likes exiles, gears, mmos, RPGs, air, grapes, crepes, or Diablo 2.

18 more hours until we know! If it is Fallout 4, that'll be reason enough to get a PS4.

On mine and metalxdelignt's Dallas conversations: Went to Zeus Comics today and picked up Saga of the Swamp Thing vol. 4 and some Doctor Who stuff. Super cool place. Lot of room move around in. Also went next door to Common Grounds to peep their Magic stock. Though I didn't buy anything there, I was super impressed with how nice the workers were. Can't say that about most other game shops. Also checked out Half Price Books. Wife and I got separated for about 30 minutes due to it's overwhelming size.

I'm glad you enjoyed Zeus' and CGG :) The openness of Zeus is what I love the most and the fact that everything is easy to find. I probably should've warned about HPB it's the largest I've been to in Texas, but I love the place. I always leave with a cart full. Did you get to stop at Titans? He had a 75% off sidewalk sale.

I didn't get a chance to go to Titans. I may go check it out Monday when my wife is gallivanting around Northpark. I also didnt get a chance to go to Good Records. I'm thinking about going back to Common Grounds and picking up some of the Zendikar full art lands. They had them for $1.25 a pop and looked like they had quite a few in stock.

I hope you get to go, the deals were awesome! :) I'm going to have to make some time to go to CGG as well, I want to see if they have any more Holiday boxes. I bought one from target the other day and pulled a {Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx} in the very first booster pack that I opened. Instantly made the box worth it and not to mention that I need more card storage space.
